Previously Skype was eating resources like hangouts (probably due to encryption). I think it should be a better by now. They have some annoying credits etc to make calls, it is not so easy and integrated approach (mobile number based instead of emails and user IDs).
I think I must rejuvenate my Skype account as well!! Thanks for your input!
It's really strange that MSN Messenger & Skype had all the time to be the FB,Twitter & WhatsApp but sleeping over forever!
The problem with open-source security driven -user interest- in mind companies is that they are too fragmented and divided and are not a recognized brand. While intrusive services are standardized.
In browsers we already have FireFox, ViValdi, Chromium, Brave and others. Linux has a million flavours. Messaging has mutliple options of which are Telegram, Signal, and Whisper. For office work we have NeoOffice, LibreOffice, and OpenOffice.
They need to make a standard just like Google for search, Facebook for social networking, Gmail for email, Whatsapp for Messaging, and DropBox for cloud storage. The more they divide the more it confuses the consumer.

You need a Microsoft account, which no one probably created since 2005 when Google created Gmail and YouTube. Also, Whatsapp was always a mobile app while Skype was more desktop app. Skype was branded as a service to make international calls for cheap prices which is not the same as IM.
