These guys are looking for the big pay day:D

then when companies dont meet expectations, they be like - there aint no talk about sale:rolleyes:

Would a potential purchaser not be afraid of spending up to a billion on an app that could, at any time, be pulled from Apple's app store?

Or replaced by an offical Apple version (a cross platform iMessage).

Obviously there's more non-iOS smartphones than iPhones, but to potentially lose a chunk as big as Apple would be devastating.

You'd think Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple would agree on a common messaging protocol that would work over the web and SMS. They could by-pass the phone companies, who have the unmitigated gall to charge for access to WiFi, £g, LTE etc. but then charge outrageous rates in additin for a SMS text.

There are SO MANY other great alternatives such as Facebook Messenger, Viber etc...

Of course, iMessage would be the best option for most of us ;)

So goodbye Whatsapp :)

Viber is my favorite, since it works cross-platform. And it's free!

+1

Viber is awesome. I keep in touch (voice and text) with friends and family all over the world but it's especially popular in developing countries. Never needed whatsapp.

The ignorance of so many Americans on the forum is astounding.

For whatever reason - Whatsapp isnt popular in the US - but almost everywhere else across the WORLD especially in more developing nations - Whatsapp is almost on every single smartphone and is a primary method of digital communication.

It is a fantastic app and can only get better hopefully. It does what it needs to do and does it very well. If it aint broke...

Totally agree! It's a great cross platform messenger and you don't even need email address to register. It's being enjoyed around the world like 'football'...

Dont be like yahoo, where they denied msft buyout... And look what happen to them. And whatsapp was build by two former yahoo employee. Or i'm just making absurd connection here :D

Um, last I checked, "WhatsApp" was #1 on the US Paid App chart. Sounds like YOU might be the ignorant one. It even says that in the posting. People in the US are criticizing it because it hardly seems worth $1 billion, not necessarily because it's not used.

Between iMessage and SMS Its simply not needed here.
I've only heard and know about this app here on this site ONLY. I bring this app up with family and friends and they think I'm doing a crapy immitation of an accent.

Cool. Try sending a group iMessage or SMS to your non-iPhone friends. Oh, you can't?

It's almost like you're trying to make out that your usage scenarios are the only ones that matter...

This app requires a phone number (and therefore won't work with iPod touch, iPad, etc) which is a silly anachronism. IMessage is superior to anything I've seen, but not everyone has apple devices :) there is a need for a good messenger to message non-apple smartphone users.

It seems to me that you could register a Google Voice number with Whatsapp so that you could use it on iPod Touch or iPad, etc. Since my home VoIP service has a SMS gateway, I'm going to try to register that number with Whatsapp and see how it goes on my iPod Touch.

Ummm actually that is exactly the way you and others sound, as if whatsapp is the only messaging app that matters and everyone else is ignorant for not using it..Between the two methods I use and the way I use them, I have no issues texting both my android and iphone friends. Eh hello I nor anyone I know ever heard of this app, OBVIOUSLY we are able to text each other perfectly fine without it. For me and those who I communicate with theres simply no need for this app thats all I'm saying.

No Google App has ads.

I think its just the anti google brigade on this website, just let it go not worth the argument with them.

Agreed. I haven't come up with at good reason to do this as of yet.

7 people on iMessage 121 of my 134 contacts on whatsapp in my case :D

+ iMessage always takes forever to send pictures and you cannot stalk people as good. "last seen ..." etc

Subscription? What??

I never actually paid for WhatsApp. I guess I downloaded it back when it was free. As I understand now, it's $0.99 to buy. If they charge $0.99/yr I'll probably drop it. I know it's only a buck, but I only talk to 1 person on it so it hardly seems worth it. Plus, that one person I talk to likely won't pay either (You know, Android users never pay for anything ;))

I'd rather pay $0.99 without Google adds.

You could do even better - get it for free from Google and still use it without ads (because despite quite common misconceptions on Apple-centric forums, Google services like Google Voice etc. do not have any adds).

They will have your phone number, linked with WhatsApp.
And I think we know how Google makes it's money.

Never heard google calling people to talk about ads

Weird because the top downloads on Android/Google play are mostly not free

Maybe you and your friend just dont like to pay for software ?

$0.99/yr

Almost all smartphone users in Hong Kong use WhatsApp. I don't know about other countries but here you have to pay for cross-network SMS messages and not everyone uses iPhone.

If they develop a desktop client then it will work like iMessage, but cross-platform too.
