WhatsApp has added new text formatting options to the chat platform, enabling users to message each other everything from grocery lists to step-by-step instructions in mid-conversation.

Following Wednesday's update, WhatsApp users can now use bulleted and numbered lists, block quotes, and inline code to communicate more effectively.

The new formatting options join the existing bold, italic, strikethrough, and monospaced formats that have been available to WhatsApp users for a while now.

How to Use New WhatsApp Text Formatting Options

  • Bulleted list: Start a new line with a - (dash) symbol, followed by a space.
  • Numbered list: Start a new line with 1 or 2 digits, followed by a period and a space.
  • Block quote: Start a new line with the > symbol, followed by a space.
  • Inline code: Wrap any code or text you want to highlight using the ` (backtick) symbol.

Last month, WhatsApp introduced a custom sticker creation tool for iPhone users running iOS 17 or later. In a future update, WhatsApp also plans to add passkey support, allowing iPhone users to sign in to the app with Face ID, Touch ID, or their device's passcode.

Is sad that they never added multi profile WhatsApp…

I suppose now the question is: if you have older relatives who are obsessed with suddenly texting out of the blue on WhatsApp, how will they use these new features to make their random texts even more exciting? 🤪

Deleted after realising that I was getting ads all over my Apple devices on subjects discussing with mates (without looking up at all with safari or else). So someone was hearing. Never been happier.
Funny thing, I use WhatsApp frequently over the last five years because I do a lot of overseas business and have family on two other continents many of which are not Apple products users. I have never ever experienced what you describe. I checked with a few other people I know and they said the same thing.

WhatsApp business app, has long offered the opportunity for advertising. If you are being listened too, you have security problems that likely have nothing to do with Apple or What'sApp.

Why is it most of us never have these kinds of problems? More often than not, it's user error regarding privacy controls.

Too bad the backtick isn't easy to get to in iOS keyboard. It's hidden by long press under the single quote 🤦‍♂️
I added a Text Replacement shortcut in iOS for ``` a few years ago for that reason.

I've been hoping for years that iMessage would add text formatting like this along with standard bold, italic, underline options. Up to this point, it would have been a differentiator amongst the other messaging apps, and a genuinely useful feature.

Not that I don't still want them to add it, but they missed an opportunity to go there first and set their software apart.
It's insane to me that iMessage will let you send all these elaborate reactions, embed files, etc -- but you can't simply bold or italicize or underline text at all.

I’d love my friends to use Signal. Unfortunately, only 4 of my mates use it, the go to for everyone is WA. So frustrating.

As I’m stuck with it (gets used for work so I have to), I care not for those features, but what I would love to see is customisation, like Signal. Let me change my text box colours-first world problem I know, but it’d be nice. You can change the backgrounds all you want, but if text boxes are ways that bloody putrid green colour, always looks naff!

It's interesting to see how WhatsApp and Signal handle formatting differently. WhatsApp going the old school message board route and Signal opting for a menu option on highlighted text similar to the Notes app in iOS.

ive also found more people preferring what's app to do business deals instead of email.. no idea why but my guess is the informal nature of it maybe?

just had an example of this today. I emailed a customer and he replied with What's app with the info I needed. I was telling my boss and he had the same thing. said people aren't responding to email and he will what's app them and then he gets a reply instantly. it's so very odd! I'm in sales so I'm not going to try and just what's app my customers who've not got back to me as a test to see how it works..

We almost always get WhatsApp confirmations, even for final quotes and quantities or other important commercial decisions. Client's refuse to use emails, says it's much faster and quicker to send decisions on WhatsApp instead of composing emails on mobile phones.

What we do in this case is, we screenshot client's WhatsApp confirmation and email it to back to them, ensuring we have an email trail of the progress of any commercial deals. Email stays on our central server, so we have to do this for ease of traceability & accountability.

It's impossible to get some people to send emails. They say, it's too formal to send emails and much prefer WhatsApp communications!! Instead of trying to change their behaviour, we have changed ourselves and begin to accept that WhatsApp and other forms of messaging, is becoming the new 'emails" in business environment !!!

really interesting. we are in retail so the buyers for the indie shops get 200 emails a day and I think its easy to just get lost in there mail box.

I'm def gonna do more on what's app.
