It surprises me that some people here don't even know what WhatsApp is. Are they being sarcastic?

Here in Europe WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging app, to the point even where is becomes ridiculous. Even iPhone users use WhatsApp to communicate with each other, it's crazy. I only use iMessage between my dad and my wife and that's it.

I hate WhatsApp but I had to embrace it a long time ago. You're not going to move the masses to use anything else.
I suspect its pretend denial. Everyone i communicate with uses it and would have to persuade a lot of people to move to a different product if I chose to ignore it. Having said that, very disappointed that the Mac desktop version does not have equivalent functionality to the phone version. No voice calling for example.

I love the groups, the integrated searches and that it has nothing to do with Zuckerberg and his data mining cronies.

Considering the amount of hatred on this forum towards Google and it's suspected approach to users data, it is astonishing to me that Facebook seems to go rather unscathed.

The irony is that Telegram’s sole financial source is Pavel Durov, the Russian ‘Zuckerberg’ who created VKontakte (the Russian pendant to Facebook). Would you still be so open about Telegram if it were financed by Zuckerberg himself? It is also not really clear which entity ultimately owns Telegram, it is currently being controlled by a web of letterbox companies and I read that some Russians associated with VKontakte are still claiming that Telegram belongs to them.

Telegram has had encryption since day 1. Whatsapp is playing catchup

A notable difference is that Telegram’s encryption scheme is home-brewed and untested. Ample cryptography experts have raised serious doubts about this and there has been at least one academic paper that demonstrated the risks. Telegram had also no perfect forward secrecy for at least a year.

Not by default. That's the difference, and that's why argubly Whatsapp is more secure. Indeed, WhatsApp tells you if a conversation is secure or not.

In addition not having permanent cloud storage of chats also makes Whatsapp much more secure. Telegram servers are a weak point because it's another repository of your data.

I'm not trying to put Telegram down, as I said I prefer Telegram, but between the two WhatsApp is more secure due to default encryption and how it handles your chat storage.

My initial thoughts - not bad. I would like the ability to change the stock wallpaper like we can do within the iOS app, but I won't be using the desktop app very much to be honest.

Late for whom? WhatsApp seems to have a massive user base. Seems they would be fairly happy to have the desktop app. I don't use any of the messaging apps so it really has no bearing on my life, but it's always interesting to me when we poo poo new offerings from companies we don't use.

Somebody's, a lot of somebody's, is using the heck out of WhatsApp.

Dude, don't you know Wechat has the most users in the world? Monthly active users in Wechat is up to 549 million by the end of 2015. Wechat is not only a chat app, there are much more activities to be done in this app which you could not imagine. Big international companies, universities, city coucils all have their offcial counts in Wechat so that we could easily get access to many sevices conveiniently. You will never know how useful could Wechat be in our daily life in China.

Dude, don't you know Wechat's monthly active user numbers in no way, shape, or form negate what I stated about Whatsapp? I said Whatsapp has a massive user base. I didn't say Whatsapp has the largest user base. If I did, then your point would still be irrelevant to the topic of my post, which was Whatsapp giving their users more features.

You
With my iPhone sleeping it could not synchronise. Had to wake up my phone first. What's the use ? Also noticed there is no calling option on the MAC app. Deleted the app.

You're right. It's because ios doesnt have real multitasking. It doesnt happen when using my android with the desktop app. But it always had connection issue with iphone after the phone is sleeping. Sucks.

I downloaded and tested the stand alone app. I couldn't find anything advantageous over the Web-Whatsapp version. In fact, Safari on my Mac is almost always open and with a pinned tab to Web-Whatsapp, I always get a notification as well. With the stand alone app, I need to launch it first and then keep it alive by minimizing; not that practical.

Can it be used for video calls?
I learnt some persons are complaining about the desktop app, that it crashes easily.
How true is that?
