Neither, WhatsApp is available in the Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/whatsapp-desktop/id1147396723?mt=12

Not universal yet but can confirm that it works great, no issues whatsoever.

Hmm ok, but I think, it's only a wrapper to WhatsApp Web and it send's and receives the messages via your mobile.

You're absolutely right, it does. It's a bit more than a simple wrapper but still requires a cell phone to connect to.
