What do you mean by "kicked a tick"? Is the other person seeing your message as delivered and/or read? Are you getting the notification on your phone screen without any sound?

Not receiving notification or arriving too late

Their was a update for WhatsApp around a hour ago, maybe that will fix your problem.

I don't think this has to do anything with the Phone. Happened to me on different phones android and iOS both.
And sorry I don't think there is a solution to this problem I searched a lot but couldn't find anything.
