If you live in a country where you could dragged out of bed at night by thugs for criticizing the government.

OK. Although.. I'm sure I would trust a Facebook product if that was a risk, regardless of it had IP protection and encryption.

I outta give my IP address to the other party than make more of my life to funnel thru Meta.

It's become too standard, and I'm not so important to influence others to change the platform of choice beyond my immediate circle. iMessage is big in US, and I use it whenever I talk with US folks (mostly business). But Europe and Latin America, Whatsapp it is!
WhatsApp was fine before meta took over. If you choose to use it, that is your decision regardless of where you live. I live in a country where WhatsApp is huge and if people insist I use it to communicate, I don’t communicate with them. I offer iMessage, signal, telegram, sms etc. as alternatives.

My friends in the UK use whatsApp, I wont have it on my phone, I dont have any messaging apps apart from iMessage. I dont want a stream of noise from people talking about thier dog, food, weddings etc which appears to be what they send. They all say you dont use 'messenger' and nope I wont go near FB messenger either and I am just fine with that too.

So, I should stop communicating with my doctors, my dentist, my attorney, my physical therapist, my mechanic, etc.?

"Instala mi aplicación preferida o no me comunicaré más contigo. Gracias."

My, what a big ego you have!

What are the privacy concerns of iMessage? I mainly use that app for texting.
Apple says it's end-to-end encrypted, but there is no proof.

In general, when you are looking for secure messaging apps, this chart is super helpful. It's a little outdated, but covers a LOT of the factors and shortcomings with messaging apps:

It takes a big ego to not use WhatsApp? I don’t force anything upon anyone, but good of you to attack my choices. I don’t use FaceBook messenger either, does that make me a nihilist in your expert opinion..?

By the way the default is sms, and always available if alternative apps are not acceptable.

Another person attacking me for choosing not to use WhatsApp. You even copied his attempt to make it about my ego.

To infer that choosing to not use WhatsApp is an egotistical decision is ignorant.

Alan made a great point though. Imagine you need to talk to a doctor, who’s given you WhatsApp for emergencies but you don’t use it. So you’re going to tell the doctor to download something else so he could stay in touch with you? The doctor won’t even bother. And it will be the same with EVERY doctor, because WhatsApp has become the default, to the point that everyone is expected to use it. If you decide not to for whatever reason, you’re just going to isolate yourself in many countries in Europe and Latin America.

Too ignorant to know how to delete a message sent in haste.

Thank you. In México, WhatsApp is 100% the default, because the poor change phones and pay-as-you-go plans with amazing frequency, and WhatsApp is extremely portable.

I don't like Meta and spend less than 10 minutes a day on Instagram and Facebook. I only use them because as a boomer, that's how I keep track of my extended family as we slip into the grave.

Finally, because of my age, health, and residency, I don't worry about privacy as much as a young buck should. My privacy matters less to me than the ability to contact the vet that makes house calls using WhatsApp. YMMV.

No Doctor in their right mind would use text to reach patients. Stop this nonsense.

I’ve not had that experience and as such need not use WhatsApp. Sounds like you live in a particularly lousy place if doctors force communication of your private medical details via an insecure platform. I feel sorry for you, best of luck with that.

Viva México… You spend 100% more time using meta products than I do, that is your choice and doesn’t infer that I am an egotist or narcissist for my choice to not use their products.

I don't believe that you know what health freedom is like.

A life in which doctors don't have a nurse intermediary, but deal with patients directly. (Many don't even have a receptionist or assistant.) Patients keep their own records and bring what's required to an appointment--including MRI disks and X-rays--and they're handed back to the patient at the end of the appointment. (I recently had 3 X-rays emailed to me before the technician said goodbye.) If a doctor believes that a patient would benefit from a medication, s/he writes it on letterhead that is show to a pharmacist--and it's returned to the patient with the drug. Oh, and one can buy nearly every medication without a doctor's note, including injectables that come in a box with an ampule and a syringe.

In this environment, there's nothing unusual about texting one's physicians or having a doctor text a patient.

They all do. For quick questions like “hey, should I stop this treatment, or I couldn’t find this med, what’s the alternative?” And if it needs more interaction they call you. Again, people in some countries tend to think that’s what’s common in one is common everywhere. Guess what? It is not

You and Hildy are assuming that the customs where you leave are universal, where in fact they aren’t. Why is that so hard to understand?

You are the one making assumptions, I am not. I’m not sure why you do not understand, however you clearly do not.
