100 million? This is great news! As someone living in the USA, I really look forward to asking people IRL how many of their friends and family they've added on WhatsApp.

...and then they'll ask "uh.... WHAT app?" because there's 233 million people in the USA who aren't on it. :p

Nobody knows or uses iMessage in Europe. WhatsApp is the standard, like Spotify. Those apps will slowly erode apples apps in the us too.

I find that surprising. Outside of business and international communication, most people I know never even heard of WhatsApp.. or they did but it was because of scammers.

I think Meta missed an opportunity not to advertise its E2E encryption and compatibility while Apple was pushing its Privacy ads. Seen a lot of Messenger video ads instead. Missed an even bigger opportunity by not pushing it before the US carriers started touting their 'Unlimited' plans.

WhatsApp is the standard over here and in every European country. I also use it with friends living in Toronto.

WhatsApp is so 2011, Telegram is where it’s at.
Telegram is so 2017. Since Covid, there's only conspiracy nuts and drug dealers left on there. Isn't it Signal for normal people, Discord for younger ones and Whatsapp for Karen and other people who don't care?

I use both iMessage and WhatsApp in the UK. Apple should have created an iMessage app for all devices — perhaps they still will?
That’s what they’re going to do if I read the possibilities of iOS 18. But it’s too little too late here.

For over a decade now, WhatsApp has been a major, dominating force outside of the USA.

And for well over a decade, it's been entirely irrelevant in the USA. Why? Honestly, who knows? But I really don't see it changing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ll see a change. Like iTunes was a standard for music more than a decade ago… Spotify took over. iMessage only works between Apple devices and ultimately that is what will kill it. Thanks Timmy for the inconvenience and lack of vision.

Not surprising. WhatsApp actually has cross-platform support; literally the one absolutely essential feature for a messaging platform.

A messaging platform that fails at communicating with a significant portion of the population is essentially worthless in comparison. Even if it has features that would otherwise be nice, it’s failing at its primary purpose; communication.

Interesting its still apparently gaining marketshare in the U.S.. In the U.S. Facebook / Meta Messenger is the biggest marketshare 3rd party message app (as it is in Canada). But most of the rest of the world its WhatsApp (Facebook certainly shouldn't have been allowed to buy WhatsApp way back when while Facebook had its own message app (Messenger these days).

Would be interesting if the network effect of most of the rest of the world will gradually bring the U.S. and Canada in line on WhatsApp over time. Would def prefer Signal or a multiplatform iMessage but the ability to gain that marketshare seems like it sailed many, many years ago...with Zuck swallowing it up on nearly every country (between WhatsApp mostly, but Facebook Messenger is most of the remaining countries) its pretty astounding when you look at it.

Likely due in part to iOS 18 beta and the inability to send messages under the trash software Apple has been pushing.

I seriously cannot believe how we can’t send a iMessage now or with many failing to deliver. They were working on RCS for a while and announced it last year! How is it this bad at this point. There really is no excuse except for Tim being not a products guy and having lost key talent. They are about average and at the level of Microsoft in my eyes.

Support also being offshored. The quality of finish and polish was their standout. And betas always have issues, but even “stable” public release software isn’t working well despite factory resets etc. very disillusioned with Apple and not surprised others are exploring alternatives as a result.
They are betas. Far from polished software.
