I don't think most people left Facebook because it's owned by Meta. They don't use it because it's an awfully complicated app with very boring content. WhatsApp on the other hand is still a very polished and focused experience. No clutter and (thank god) no advertising. Would I prefer it if my contacts to use something else? Sure. But I won't go around and tell others what kind of software to use.
To be honest I’m surprised Zuck didn’t add advertising to WhatsApp and introduce a paid subscription if you don’t want ads. Maybe it’s in Zuck’s pipeline for the app?

It probably should concern him that WhatsApp is owned by Meta as much as it should concern you that iMessage is owned by Apple. As of July 2024, Facebook has 3.06 billion monthly active users. That's about double of Apple users of all kinds. It would appear people trust Meta more than they trust Apple.
Trust?!? Please be real. More like they’re too addicted. For the record, while I don’t trust Apple 100 percent (no one should trust any company 100 percent), I do trust them more than creepy Zuck.

I don’t remember the last time I used my personal email. My work email is just for keeping a formal record of conversations (like deadlines and invoices), and I use WhatsApp groups instead of Teams for quick or urgent stuff. 2 iphones, personal and work with different accounts.

How is that posting all your personal info online?

Which would you prefer, Whatsapp to do that or your next door neighbour, (or even you yourself), to post your weight, credit card info, address, telephone number, family tree, internet history, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Let's ascertain exactly what is meant by 'collected'.
Then let's ascertain what they may be legally required to collect if at all.
Let's take location. WhatsApp has a feature that allows me to share my location with another Whatsapp user, that might be quite difficult to achieve without first collecting my location.

Use an FOI request to find out exactly what they have on you, if it's a problem.

yes, and I believe that is the reason why WhatsApp took off in Europe, sending a SMS from one country to the next cost like an arm and a leg.
And that's part of my it did not take off in the US as most people have unlimited plans on voice min/text messages.
I think it is well over a decade that I got charged for test messages ...
More like most people don’t leave their state

I use the app since I moved to Europe. I certainly understand not wanting anything “meta.”
I love iMessage for a variety of reasons, but when it comes to search, sharing, and management it is by far superior.

1. Searching in iMessage has not been the easiest. Latest iOS updates have made it a little easier but still difficult. I love the fact that I can search for something quickly within the same chat I’m in.

2. iMessage App is horrendous when it comes to storage management! I 🙋‍♂️ keep deleting photos etc, but they always appear again. The issue has been here for years, across all of my Apple platforms.
I’m WA, you can select a single image and delete all of its copies from other chats at the same time, if you wish. Great for deleting a picture you shared with many friends. You can star a message and when you want to delete the conversation from “junk” and keep the important stuff, you can delete everything except “started” messages.
Can delete all GIFs at the same time. So easy!
Deleting a series of messages on WA is easy, can tap and drag to select a long series of photos. On iMessage, you STILL have to select one by one. And then when I delete them, they appear again 🤦‍♂️

3. Sharing/forwarding is a million times better on WA. It takes too many clicks on iMessage to forward something, and it has to be one by one. And searching for someone’s name always takes a second to yield results when you want to start a new conversation or type the recipient of the message being forwarded.

4. Exporting individual chats! Nice option. Has come in handy a couple of times for me.

That said,
iMessage is better because
We generally speaking trust Apple more than Meta on privacy, duh
Photo quality or video quality on iMessage soooo much better than WA

100 million? This is great news! As someone living in the USA, I really look forward to asking people IRL how many of their friends and family they've added on WhatsApp.

...and then they'll ask "uh.... WHAT app?" because there's 233 million people in the USA who aren't on it. :p
You don't add people it uses your address book. Adding people to instant message is so 1990s.

If Meta wants to push their products as a standard they need to get over their deep-seated hatred if the iPad and push out iPad apps. Until then, they’re not really taking it seriously.

(And no the web is not good enough unless they’re also expecting mobile phone users to use the web)
Not all iPads have sim cards. You register a WhatsApp account with a sms text.

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted.
end to end encryption that is only for man in the middle.

1. Zucker can read what you are reading and what you are writing because you use the app. simple
2. zucker has access to all your contacts (you need to give access otherwise whatsapp does not work)
3. zucker has access to your photo library (most people give access). including timestamp and location
4. zucker has access to your mic and front cam (most people allow access)

if you combine all points you can imagine what zuck knows about you, your friends, their friends and do on

No wonder WhatsApp is getting more and popular in the US. WA feels like a real, more personal messenger to communicate, especially groupchats. iMessage feels like SMS for me.

I'm in the EU and iMessage and regular SMS to Android phones works good enough for me, so I don't use WhatsApp.

But I look forward to RCS support in iOS.

In Europe, countries where I've lived everybody uses WhatsApp. Even if both of us use iPhones nobody uses iMessage etc. Just WhatsApp.
I've never FaceTimed with anyone. When I ask someone to use Messages or FaceTime they say no.

Apologies for the poor resolution, it was the best quality one I could find, but this has all of the info you will need, plus includes Facebook Messenger, which is even worse.

Isn't Telegram Russia-based? Like the famed ICQ in its later days? If Telegram is Russia-based, then it boggles the mind why also Ukraine (military and such) is using Telegram.
Its servers are distributed worldwide but the headquarters are in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As it was founded by Nikolai and Pavel Durov, I suspect its certainly likely to have Russian links. Telegram only offers end-to-end encryption only when you use its secret chat option

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted.
Conversations are. Group names and descriptions aren’t.

Your contacts certainly aren’t.

WhatsApp gets all your contact info, knows who you talk to, what groups of contact you create. They are able to create a social graph of every WhatsApp user.

You thought that Meta provided WhatsApp for free out of kindness of their heart?

So yes, I am pissed when I see most of my fellow Europeans use WhatsApp. It’s crazy to me that people give all that personal data to Meta.

Apple doesn’t have access to location data shared through iMessage.
You don't know that, you don't have access to iOS source code. You're just guessing and iMessage doesn't have your payment info but apple has it so you can buy things in the app store. The JPG I quoted is just trying to scare people.
