Yup, and we still can't figure out how the "rest of the world" got scammed into it! It is free because Zuck hoovers up your data and sells it! Let that sink in.

This is precisely why there isn't an iPad app, if its not tied to a phone you don't get as much data hoovering goodness.
It wasn't free when it became popular

Don't use WhatsApp much but the higher resolution video calls is a nice change. Will not be using the effects during video call anyway.

Meta owned = no
So you’re also not using Facebook or Instagram?

If Apple made their messages cross platform years ago, it could have been the WhatsApp what most people use worldwide.

I think WhatsApp is slowly eroding Apple’s messaging app and will become the standard worldwide in a few years, even in the US.

Apple opening up their messaging app to play nice with others is already too late for that. Like Apple Music compared to Spotify… Spotify is also slowly eating up Apple Music.

This is a great point. I prefer iMessage, but since it only works with Apple devices I have to also use something else. This becomes even more of an issue when I'm at my place in the EU as even fewer people have iOS devices.

While I'm not a huge fan of Meta knowing who I communicate with, WhatsApp uses the Signal protocol so the chats themselves are E2EE.

Never going to happen because Timmy won’t allow it. Timmy’s focus is on 💰💰💰 and not what users want.
It has nothing to do with Timmy or Apple. I have 3 accounts on my Telegram app (and room for more), and 2 accounts on my Facebook messenger app.

We could've been standardized on Google's messaging platform, but they kept shooting themselves in the foot with the constant rebrand & killing of messaging platforms.

(Google Talk -> Google Hangouts had a bunch of users globally back then and then Google killed it)

The current second most used messenger in US is Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp has a long ways to go to catch up in the US

Regardless, I've never understood how some people feel superior over others on the choice of messaging platforms. It's just a tool, and what really matters is if the people you talk to is on a particular platform, not necessarily the technical superiority of one over the other.

Whatsapp is also from meta as is Facebook. I’m sure they’ll merge it in the foreseeable future and give it some useful AI.
