WhatsApp is in the early phases of testing a new privacy feature on the messaging platform that will allow users to secure their chat backups, according to WABetaInfo.

Currently, WhatsApp on iPhone lets users back up their chat history to iCloud, but messages and media that users back up are not protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption while in iCloud.

This new feature would resolve that security hole by allowing users to encrypt and password protect their chat history before uploading it to the cloud.

The new encryption and password-protection feature is currently being tested on Android for Google Drive chat backups, but given the way the Facebook-owned platform goes about testing and deploying new features, there's every chance that it will eventually come to WhatsApp for iPhone too.

As mentioned, this change to the way chats are backed up is still in the early stages of testing, and there's never any guarantee that new features will make it to public release.

Earlier this week, WhatsApp's long-requested Dark Mode rolled out to all users. Check out MacRumors' quick guide on how to set it up.

Now they need to working on cross platform backups. I sometimes switch back and forth between iOS and Android and the backups are not interchangeable.
Even more considering it's owned by Facebook, and Messenger works multiplatform.

Anybody an EXPERT? Their customer services is a teenager party.

Two major unanswered questions for me:

1.My last week (forced) backup size is 1.44Gb. Daily auto backup is not happening even though I have 2.9Gb free on iCloud. Why? Manual backup works, auto wont. Oh, and I have the iCloud Backup switch off for WhatsApp, only the first switch is on in the iCloud settings (which is the iCloud Drive section, the second switch is inside Manage Storage > Backups > Device Name > this one is off for WhatsApp

What the heck?

2.My total Whatsapp app size is 2.68Gb on the iPhone Storage section, 65mb app size and 2.62Gb of data. BUT, if I go to WhatsApp settings > Data and Storage Usage > Storage Usage > and add up EVERY SINGLE CHAT data amount, it adds up to 1.62Gb (yes including videos). So whats the other 1Gb coming from? (To get 1.62Gb to 2.62Gb) ???

HELP! HALF A YEAR LIKE THIS!

What if you use normal iCloud device backup? It backup your chats in a secure manner right?

Exactly, it is ingenious to expect customers to use only one platform! I have lost (rather unable to port) cross platform WhatsApp chat backups recently when I went back and forth between iOS and Android

I hope Signal is going to take WhatsApp place soon enough...
Signal and Telegram needs to work their ways to compete against WhatsApp in a big way! Only if they do OTB porting off all WhatsApp groups along with data in single stroke they could get closer to WhatsApp! WhatsApp is too good in usability.

Turn off dark mode in your iOS settings.
I know what I need to do to turn off the dark mode in Whatsapp, the problem is that because of an application, I can't use the dark mode I've been with since iOS 13 came out. That's stupid

iCloud backups are not encrypted, and Apple have openly said previously that they hand over any iCloud data they hold to law enforcement in cases where they want access to data on the handset.

came to the comments to make this same point. Incredibly frustrating.

That's probably hard to do since they use iCloud to backup.

Then they should stop exclusively using iCloud. I have google drive on both platforms. I have Dropbox on both platforms. I have email access on both platforms. Instead of just blindly using the native cloud backup for each platform, they should offer options, of which there are many.
