What difference does paying a couple bucks for threema make? It's leaps and bounds above whatsapp and the turn around they did concerning your privacy. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me that you're ok with that.

So I paid a few bucks for threema. I guess that makes ProtonMail and the pro account I pay for trash right?

Telegram? I can't even get their support to answer my emails or tweets in regards to me not being able to register. Staying silent when a user requests help does not sit well with me at all. That along with the fact that telegram chats aren't secret by default is also a killer.
It makes the difference that guarantees only a small amount of people will use it. The one factor which is still the most important aspect of a messenger.

I share your enthusiasm about small cash for great products but you choose the wrong platform to have a lot of friends on it.

Wish everybody used iMessage though :(
Wish instant messaging / texting was as universal as email, phone or SMS, i.e. the app used didn’t matter. Most of them use Jabber/XMPP under the hood, but in deliberately incompatible ways. It’s unbelievable how bad Telcos were and are treating Joyn/Message+/RCS.

On a related note, I’m still waiting for Apple to submit all Facetime protocols for open standardization by a neutral body like Steve Jobs promised when he first announced the feature.
