Pretty simple really. The phone companies got greedy with SMS charges, and WhatsApp had first mover advantage with their extremely easy to use cross platform solution.

Agree with everything but "extremely easy to use". It has always been and still is a garbage UI.

As much hate as I have for META. The UI, the search, the features in WhatsApp are simply better than the messages app.
I use both apps every day. And WhatsApp unfortunately provides a better experience than messages
