I just got the one from the webite and it shows version 130.

It seems to use less memory as well.
Ah, found out why I got version 97 when I downloaded: I'm stuck on High Sierra and after doing the download on my iPhone I see that version 130 requires Mojave or later

It's consuming less 600mb compared to the Mac App Store version to me....

Given that the core code must be identical from a system call point of view, should take just a few days then to customise the controls for the new (only out 10 years) UI Lol

Whatsapp has been working on an iPad app for years. What will be news is Whatsapp has released an iPad app

Don't tell Apple but, I don't care what these cost, I'm getting it. Watching a movie on Oculus Quest really is like looking at a 50 foot screen while lying on my back in bed or the sofa. And the sound is great. Of course there's the "screen door effect" - where it's like looking at the video through a screen door... but with the rumored 8K screens this should be solved or good enough.

This is long overdue. A company like Facebook (Meta) should have done this years ago, specially when newer or smaller apps are getting this done early and well implemented.

Kudos to for implementing a solution that works the same way on MacOS and iPadOS.

Now hopefully they deliver in months and not years.

I declined and chose Signal instead.

The more people who do this and ask others to follow suit, the weaker Meta becomes.
That's not a solution either. I do hate FB as well, but what the world really needs is an open source communication standard that can do what WhatsApp can, but independent of what client you use, just like SMS in the old days.
I know that there's such things already in development, sort of, but people and tech companies must want to use it as well... And right now, no one seems to care. People happily use WhatsApp for the simple reason that everyone else uses WhatsApp, and tech companies next to FB are still trying to push their own proprietary standard and disregard anything that is Open Source (including Apple!).
As such, this stupid WhatsApp dominance will never end ?‍♂️

There's 2 billion users on WhatsApp, no ones moving away from it. Just how it is.

I tried to get friends and family to use Telegram (my preference) & Signal, but WhatsApp is literally the #1 app most people want and need. No one's interested in anything else.

Everyone in my family has an iPhone so it's bizarre that no one uses iMessage, but they have their social groups firmly established in WhatsApp and no one's going to migrate away from it.

iMessage would have had a shot at being a proper competitor if it was available on Android from day 1, but it wasn't.
Aside from that, iMessage is very inferior UX wise sadly.

-Many individual replies aren’t shown intuitively
-Can’t swipe and reply
-When long pressing an audio to reply it will play the audio no matter what when you just want to reply
-Can’t scrub audio messages timelines
-Up until recently audio quality was subpar at best
-Can’t swipe up to hold audio recording without having to press your finger, etc, etc, etc.

I use WhatsApp on my work laptop and work phone as a lot of our tenants use it when communicating with us . Always thought there should be an iPad version and would great given the size of the screen and I use my iPad a lot for texting .

Desktop apps which lols like Device apps suck. Just look at the lates monster (Outlook) from Microsoft.

Why does apps now suddenly need very big buttons and menubars as if people suddenly went blind.

I got the updated WhatsApp app on macOS 12 last week. And yes it doesn’t rely on a smartphone connection. I think bc I live in Lebanon we got it early. If you have questions I might be able to answer them.

Not a big Meta fan at all. But I have to hand it to them, using Catalyst to build the mac app is way better than having it based on Electron.

This. No more Electron crap that is eating memory like hell. After all the optimisation they poured into it, it is still using 1.5GB of memory doing barely anything.
