I still don't see the option to activate the encryption. Has it rolled out to anybody yet?

It just appeared for me in Spain, but I'm still not clear about disabling only the WhatsApp backup in iCloud ?
I also don't know if I do decide to encrypt my WhatsApp backup whether the password will be in Passwords on my iPhone and also on my MacBook Pro so that it will be entered automatically? ?

Still not showing for me in the UK.

You are right for the iCloud backup. As far as I know there is currently no way of excluding a specific app from a full-device iCloud backup.
Disabling the WhatsApp toggle in Settings > Apple ID > iCloud will only disable the future-encrypted backup... I guess it's for Apple to move....

Well, this is what I see on my iPhone 8 after disabling WhatsApp backup on the phone's iCloud setting:

I'm wondering if I should delete the existing, unencrypted backup on iCloud, and then set up WhatsApp to encrypt ?

No I'm afraid you understood wrong.
Disabling the WhatsApp toggle in Settings > iCloud prevents the proper method of encrypted backups.

AFAIK, there is no way to exclude a specific app from an iCloud Device Backup, which means, if you intent to fully benefit from the encrypted WhatsApp backups, you can NO LONGER use the iOS backups and have to disable Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup instead !

So basically you're saying that in order to encrypt my WhatsApp backup to iCloud I should NOT delete the existing unencrypted backup before toggling on again my iPhone setting in order to backup anew, now encrypted by WhatsApp?

Meaning I would indeed have two backups of WhatsApp files, one encrypted and one not - or no other iCloud backups of anything?

Excuse my confusion...

You could, but I believe there is no versioning of WhatsApp’s own backups on iCloud, so I believe the encrypted version would overwrite the previous non-encrypted one anyway.

But in order to remove the iOS-generated, iCloud backup of your full phone which includes the non encrypted Whatsapp chats, from now on you would have to disable iOS backups entirely and go back to doing local backups on a PC/Mac instead.

Thanks for that. My confusion comes from here suggesting that switching on the encryption option would result in two separate WhatsApp backups occupying double the space.

It's also worth noting that if you have ‌iCloud‌ Backups turned on for your entire ‌iPhone‌, an unencrypted version of your chat history is also backed up to ‌iCloud‌. To ensure your WhatsApp chats and media are only backed up with end-to-end encryption, turn ‌iCloud‌ Backup off on your device. You can do this in the Settings app by tapping your Apple ID banner at the top, selecting iCloud, and turning off iCloud Backup.

You're welcome.

Now I really wish Apple would allow specific apps to be excluded from iCloud full backups, as it's still convenient to have auto daily backups... Or better, E2E-encrypt them directly... but one can dream....
