Does anybody remember when the Apple Stores got the iPhone as demos? Was it on the release date or a few weeks to months before?

I doubt it.

A few months ago, a customer walked into the Park City Apple Store (Lancaster, PA) and ran off with a couple of laptops/iPhones/iPods. He just yanked the cords out (I assume he ripped the case then repaired them with eBay parts) and ran with it.

Think about how many people would try to do this (and succeed) with iPads.

Apple stores closed for a couple hours on June 29, 2007. Black wrap was put over the windows and the store visual teams put out the very first iPhones. The specialists were given about an hour tops to test the devices before doors opened at 6pm and customers were able to buy the iPhone. The very first customers did not touch an iPhone until they had already purchased it.

I'm not sure this will be the same situation, however I could be wrong. I would not be shocked if Apple announces a specific launch date soon and puts out the product in the same way.
