Will probably replace it in 2-3 years.
In 8 months will hit 2 year mark with M1 Air. Hopefully they will come up with something better - but if I will be issued a work computer, then I wouldn't be so in a hurry to replace otherwise perfect M1 for personal leisure.

Thought it might be fun to revisit this thread now that we got a 15" M2 Air ... and 14/16 M2 MBP's as of Jan this year

I'd like a new 11" MacBook, even with plain M1.
Or a laptop where you can play games: super duper M3 or OG SOCs but with eGPU compatibility in the OS.

Wow indeed. Thank you for bringing up this thread. Rereading own message i now realize i had no job lined up to be issued work computer. But here i am with a new job and M1 Pro 14 that they gave me.

So staying put as i said before since my itch is scratched.

So far I don't have a super compelling reason to move on from the M1 Air. It still gets absurd battery life and it still handles everything I throw at it very smoothly. Still happy with the display, speakers and the overall package.

MagSafe would be fun, I guess? The overall design of the M2s is really nice, but not nice enough for me to spend the money at this point.

Do you also fear missing the classic wedge shape and general design or nah?

A little. I do worry very slightly about the front edge digging into my palms as I type. I used a 2012 MBP for a spell, and that sharp edge didn't feel great. On the other hand the new Airs are a lot thinner so it probably won't be an issue at all.

Had 2012 and no issues though it is higher than wedged airs. Have now 14 pro which is even higher than 2012 - never knew what is a wrist pain until this.

Do you mean wrist pain as in too-high typing position, or wrist pain as in sharp edge digging into the palms?

I have the M1 MBP, not Air, but I don't plan on upgrading until 2025 or 2026 and will be actually going for a MacBook Pro 16 inch this time around. Yes, I probably could get the 15 inch Air by that time, but I like to splurge on myself sometimes.

more like too high position of the keyboard from the table makes for the bad hand posture while typing.

Looked it up: carpal ligament pictures the place of the pain.

Oh yeah, I could see that bothering me as well. The ideal situation, apparently, is to have your wrists above the keyboard so the top of your hand forms more of a straight line with your forearm, versus having your wrists bent upward.

When I use a mechanical keyboard (even thicker than your MacBook Pro) I have used it in conjunction with a wrist rest. Not sure how practical that is with a laptop but could be worth a shot.

completely torn on which color I would go with if I were to get an M2+ Air model

Midnight, but dont know if I'd have fingerprint OCD or just get over it and enjoy the thing - would be a good mental excercise

or classic silver again, or space grey as an in between

Silver or Space Grey. Had midnight and it was a nightmare to keep looking clean and had to constantly clean. Never again. SG ftw now.

'I actually went from M1 MBA to my previous MB 12 just for the portability. Don't need such heavy computation needs so the 12" is perfect to travel with.

I still love my launch day M1 MacBook Air. If I upgrade, it’s more for the fun of trying something new rather than really needing it. I might buy the M3, but probably wait for M4 or even M5. As long as the M1 gets macOS support, there’s little real pressure to upgrade.

The only thing I regret a little is to pick 8GB RAM instead of 16GB, though slowdowns are still comparatively rare for me.
