When backing up

do you do anything else (app wise)? i.e. sometimes I'll play solitaire.
Or when running, say Disk Warrior, same thing.

Does it make a difference?

I don't alter my usage patterns because Time MAchine is running, I let that run in the background and do what I need to do.

When I clone my drive via Carbon Copy Cloner, I let that bad boy run at a time when I'm not using the computer, mostly so as not to degrade its performance and so I'll not get frustrated by things running slow as well 🙂

KISS principle.
Sometimes I'll play my local iTunes library, or look at pix; nothing that likes to write a lot of files, such as web browsers. Never had any trouble doing with the backup process, so it seems safe enough. I'll not be pushing any envelopes though.

Time Machine gets no respect whatsoever, the above refers to when I'm running SuperDuper!
