I just started using the current iPad Air (in addition to the original iPad Air) but when typing I keep bringing up the emoji picker accidentally. It’s really annoying. I just realised why though - the keyboard layout has changed from the original iPad Air.

iPad Air (2013) on iOS 12.4.7:

iPad Air (2020) on iPadOS 14.2:

When did the keyboard layout change?

I checked my mother’s 2016 iPad Pro 9.7” on iPadOS 14.2 and it does not have the same keyboard layout as my iPad Air (4th generation) on the same version of iPadOS:

Could there be something wrong with my new iPad Air? If only set it up yesterday.

Potentially something related to the region settings that are used on the device? Or perhaps the selected keyboard in keyboard settings?

All three iPads are set to the United Kingdom region and have keyboards set to English (UK).

The two with .?123 of the left of the emoji button have 9.7” screens whereas the one with .?123 on the right of the emoji button has a 10.9“ screen. Maybe the wider screen means it gets a different layout.
