Does it make any difference that now the iMac (consumer) will have a G5 and the pro laptop (the PowerBook) will still have a G4? Would that in anyway way mean that it would be more likely for a PBG5 to come out soon after the iMac G5?

Not really. Although one could argue that, if a consumer-level machine is geting a G5, the Pro-level machine DEFINITELY should, I don't think you can look at it this way. I think a more accurate view is that if Apple can put the G5 in an iMac, what sense would it make to hold that product back simply so that a G5 PowerBook could be developed more and the two could be released closer to each other? If Apple can do a G5 iMac, DO IT, and who cares if the G5 PowerBook won't be ready for another year. Hell, shove the G5 into an eMac if you get the chance as well! ;)

I'm thinking that if the G5 pb does show up at MWSF there will only be a 15" and 17". Think of it as when they released the 12" and 17" ALpb and was still selling the TiPB. I say the 12" will still hold onto the G4 until things like heat issues are worked out.

*note: They are now putting AMD64 processors in laptops now. Do they not create some heat as well?

So if you're planning on buying a PowerBook and are wondering about the G5, DON'T - just buy a PowerBook now, unless you don't mind waiting an entire year.
And then another however many months, for Rev. B.

I do think that if Apple can swing an iMac G5 with the rumored behind-LCD enclosure, they'll have essentially solved the problem of getting a G5 in a 'Book-sized form factor. But since that iMac enclosure itself is still only a rumor, and the only thing we know for sure is that Apple intends the next iMac to be G5, I wouldn't want to be making any purchasing decisions until the new iMac is revealed. And given that this won't be until the Paris Expo in September at the earliest....

If you can't wait at least a year, buy your PowerBook now.

Actually the PBG5s don't interest me that much. I mean, im looking forward to having a 64bit processor in my portable but I know its gonna be a very long time before the G5s are as refined as the PBG4s are right now. Frankly im hoping for one more G4 release before we move up, just to get things prefect!

That way, the G4 should last me untill the G5s are as cool as the current PBs - no pun intended ;).

What do you think the chances of this happening are?

Mark.

i don't think you will have to wait too long, the imac a compact computer it can't have the fans and cooling system does that the powermac does, its more like a laptop than a conventional computer. so if they are releasing a new imac in september i can't see the powerbook g5 being far behind. But they haven't made it easy given the form factor that the pbg4 has. People won't be happy if the PBG5 is a brick!!!

I agree. Would YOU want a G5 PowerBook if it looked like this?

hehehehehehe! :p i was sure that the pic you were gonna link to would be that fat powerbook with a grill and a g5 label on the side, but that was sooo much better!!! :p

I had posted a thread about the idea of a thicker G5 PB. The thought I had was to better have a thicker PB to accommodate the G% and the heating issues. My thought was to have a PB Pro series till such time that the G5 heat issues could be solved. The answer was no for the most part.

I would hope that in this day and age, IBM or Freescale would look to build a chip specifically designed for a laptop rather than scaling and trying to jam in a server/desktop chip. I look forward to that the most and am hoping for a new chip to be centrinoeqsue more than the G5.
