When do you reckon iOS 5 will be released to the public after the event?

iOS5 will be downloadable over iTunes when the iPhone 5 comes out.

Actually it will likely be available a few days before the 5 comes out. The load of new activations plus downloads of a new OS is a bit much for the servers to do at once. Better to spread them out some.

The update is never spread out over days. It's always released on the same day for everyone, but not everyone will get it at the exact same time.

I didn't say the update would be spread out, but that you wanted to spread out the hit for the update and the hit for new phones. You don't want both on the same day so you spread those two events out and do the iOS5 release a few days before the new iPhones comes out.
