I generally keep using my phones until they no longer function how I want or do what I need to do. I don't really have a set schedule for when I upgrade.

Phone contract is two years so normally the minute my date is due I do it! Last upgrade was due sept and I had planned to wait til new year however my phone developed a fault so had to update nov instead.

I can see my current 5c lasting longer than the two years at the moment! Who knows but currently very happy!

I get a new phone when I am prompted to get an upgrade. And I don't feel any sense of loyalty to any particular brand.

I typically upgrade when the best deal is available. For example I purchased my 4S in September 2011 when Verizon still offered the "new every two" program and paid $99. Verizon just offered a free 5C 32GB with a $150 bill credit for my old 4S, so I took the plunge again. Although my phone purchases are often driven by price, as any Apple loving person I will sometimes spend an exorbitant amount on something that really catches my eye!!

Jan 12 - iphone 4
Feb 12 - note 1
June 12 -iPhone 328gb
Sept 12 - note 2
Dec 12 - iPhone 4s
Feb 13 - iPhone 5
May 13 - HTC one
Sept 13- iPhone 5s
April 14 - lg g2
Sept 14. IPhone 6

When it doesn't work anymore, or I get a leap of new technologies. My iPhone 4S will serve me quite a few years more I am sure. The only thing I can see that could get me to upgrade, is NFC and the ability to actually use it to pay for stuff.

Quite a phone you got there mate!

I also upgrade mine every 2 years when the "new and improved" S model is introduced. I got my 5S last October as soon as they went on sale. AT&T charged me $199 for the phone as I was keeping the same usage plan, and they gave me a $200 account credit for my 4S, so the new phone cost me nothing. Sweet...Apple has the same deal.

Apple has suckered me into giving them money every year (only for iPhones). I sell my current phone and recover 50-60% of the cost and then I buy extra phones and resell them and make $100-200 on top to get me a free phone. So 1x a year and sell.

3G -> 4 -> 4s -> 5 -> 5s -> 6

:)

I buy every year but the S series I collect and others I sell.

iphone 2g- ebay
iphone 3gs- ebay
iphone 4- sold
iphone 4s- keping
iphone 5- selling now
iphone 5s- keeping

I'm on an every-other year cycle, I don't see the need to spend the $$ to upgrade every year and the subsidized pricing makes it beneficial to upgrade.

I'm using a Nokia Lumia now that I got on the EDGE program from verizon but I'm starting to sour on the EDGE program (now that I'm getting billed) and I think I'd rather go back to the subsidized pricing. I'll probably pay this off and then depending on what apple does either upgrade to an iPhone 6 or hold on to this.

That is I'm liking the WP phone, but I'm not liking the EDGE program. I'm also reserving judgement on whether to upgrade to an IP6 until it hits the streets :)
