When is Apple supposed to charge your card? I am looking at ordering a new Studio that won't ship until January. The website says my payment will be due now, months before I will receive the studio. I don't really want to pay for the product 3 months before I receive it.

That's not a hard and fast rule. I'll add that I ordered the Mac mini within minutes of preorders going live and Apple charged my card today but we're still a ways off from Sept 22nd.
I don't think that's true. I preorder records from UMG (UDiscover, Blue Note Store) and Craft all the time, and they charge my card in full when I order, even if the records don't ship for months.
I have also ordered hifi gear that is BTO, and can takes weeks or even months to produce. I pay when I place the order. Not when it ships.

I went to the Apple site and ask a specialist (a real person not an AI bot). I asked "If I buy a M5 Max Studio today, and use my Apple card, do you charge my card today or do you charge it when the item ships?" Here was the answer:
"When you purchase here online we do an authorization check right away, it can look like a few dollars or it can look like the entire purchase, its really up to the system, but you aren't officially charged until it ships out!"

As I said "supposed to". I'm sure the rules have changed and many exceptions made over the years.
I have a pending charge showing for the full amount. Delivery won't be until January. I will keep an eye on the pending charge status to see what happens to it.
