With IPads switching, think I phones take the leap in 2019 or 2020? Wondering if they would, and what Apple would see in it

I’m shocked they switched to USB-C on the new iPad as it is. But it makes sense when you think about it - MacBooks and iPads aren’t the top selling device for Apple. That spot is reserved for the iPhone. So they take a small loss in additional revenue by taking out the lightning cable/MagSafe cable for the former devices, but I’m betting they keep it around in the iPhone for years to come yet so they can continue to squeeze every last cent they can from the licensing costs for third parties to use the lightning connection.

Apple makes profit off of mfi licensing so no for iPhone. I think they want the iPad to have more functionality with the usb c so they needed to go this route.

I’m surprised they don’t have a proprietary technology to wirelessly charge phones.

Why should they keep lightning? Whats better on this port? Don‘t know it really
It has just about the same functionality as type C except to play videos in 4K through a cable. Type C is a better port for an Android phone which used micro USB before which provided one direction of data. Whether Apple will chance to type C on the phone is a good question especially since they are trying to find a way to remove the port altogether from the phone.

Apple will have no choice if the EC decides to force all manufacturers to switch to a common plug. In 2014, the EC gave OEM's time to voluntarily switch to a common standard by 2018. Everyone did, except Apple. The EC will now force the issue, so it's likely Apple will be using usb-c in the 2019 iPhones.

Hopefully not too soon since I got crap ton of lightning cables and some accessories.

Is the EU going to pay for the redesign of the phone? Just wondering how an anti-business group thinks they are above everyone else and can force companies to change just because they say so. Apple wants to remove the port completely from the phone. Type C would require Apple to make their phones thicker.

The EU managed to remove a plethora of bespoke phone charging options with their modest intervention.

Less cost, less waste, more commonality and more competition is usually regarded as a good thing. Well, unless you are a Chinese company knocking-out bespoke chargers or a company milking licence fees from the end user.

It will always come too soon. :)

Your comment is the same that was said about the 30-pin connector when Apple launched the iPhone 5.

I know, but other than the size thing between 30 pin and lightning, lightning didn’t really introduce anything significant. Size is pretty much the same between C and lightning and it’s not like iOS would make use of the C HDD.

The EU will not pay for anything. They rule and could care less if you agree.

Can’t say I agree with this. In terms of hardware, lightning at least allowed where it doesn’t need to be plugged in a certain way, like 30 pin did, and it’s more durable over 30 Pin.

Additionally, The lightning port is so small, it does not consume a lot of internal space, thus allowing for larger batteries and other hardware components.

And lighting also allows for a better sync/charging method.

umm, no.

Lightning can only handle up to 12W of charging power, whereas USB-C can handle up to 100 watts, 20V/5A charge speed with the USB Power Delivery technology. In addition, it’s bi-directional, so a device can either send or receive power. USB-C therefore only requires one cable and one charging brick and could essentially power everything from laptops to phones. In point of fact, I have a 60W charging brick and USB-C cable to charge my XPS laptop and when needed, I can simply pop my One+ 6T on to the same charger and cable and charge my phone if I wish. One cable, one charger to do everything.

Lightning devices transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds, which is 480Mbps while USB-C can transfer data at USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) speeds or 5Gbps. The default protocol with the USB-C connector is USB 3.1 which at 10Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 2), is theoretically twice as fast as USB 3.0. Less time transferring, more time doing.

Additionally, USB-C supports simultaneously video signals and power streams. Another thing Lightning can't do.

umm, no..

I would politely suggest you revisit my post to my response to ‘doboy’, as I was comparing 30 pin to lightning on why I disagreed, my response was _Not_ guaged to USB-C comparisons to lightning.

This was implied when I said the size difference.

Well you should look up fast charging via lightning to USB-C cable. Also the USB3 transfer speed using that cable with selected idevice(s).

my biggest concern is the other end. Sure I have 10,000 lightning cables that will become worthless but I'm going to have to get other cables or dongles for car play, use at airports and on airplanes, hotels, etc. So by the time I get done I get very little benefit from the USB-C on both ends.
I've heard rumors that Apple is going to get rid of all connectors on phone wireless for everything. The world just isn't ready for that yet. USB-A ends are just showing up at locations I just mentioned - it will be years if not longer before wireless for all

Why would they pay? If they legislate a common plug then it’s up to a company to comply or not sell to the region, I doubt Apple would decide they wouldn’t want to to sell to Europe just to keep the lightning port.

Apple wants to remove the port completely from the phone. Type C would require Apple to make their phones thicker.

That sounds unlikely, I’ve seen USB-C phones (with higher capacity batteries) that are as slim as the XS.

USB-c is far superior to lightning and has been the standard in android for 2 years now. As android has 86% of the global market, it’s time for Apple to suck it up and adopt the industry standard...

They can still take a standard usb-c cable, put their logo on it and quadruple the price... :)

Wow it would be great if ec forces Apple to usbc. Can you imagine “lightning fast” syncing with your computer? I’m totally down.
