When doing conf call, no data connection?

I was using my Iphone5, doing a conf call, and I tried to access my email, but it said 'No data connection during this call'.

Is there anyway to do call and download email at the same time?

What carrier you're on?

Assuming you're on Verizon, no you can't use data while on a phone call. Well known limitation of CDMA.
