For example, I'll open the Activity app from the Glance screen. Now I want to go back to the Glance screen, but I don't see a way of doing this. I'll have to press the Crown button but this will take me to the watch screen.

This applies to either built-in or 3rd party app. Weather, Yelp, Apple Maps, etc..etc..

Ideally, it should be like this:

Watch Screen --> (swipe up) --> Glance Screen --> Press the weather app --> (do xx to go back) --> Glance Screen.

Me thinks that you do have to press the Digital Crown again once you're on the Watch face. At least, I've seen several video's (including reviews) where they showed things like this; launching an app from its Glance, pressing the Digital Crown which brings them indeed to the Watch face.

You should think this of the Watch face: it's like the lockscreen on your iPhone. Glances are basically on that lockscreen of your Apple Watch. So are the apps once you launch them from their Glance. Like when you would open the Calculator app from Control Center on your iPhone when you've set a password; pressing the home button will take you back to that lockscreen.

Understand what I mean? It's just my 'theory' of how it works.

So the Digital Crown = Home screen button. I wish Apple will implement a "swipe" to go back to the previous screen.

It's not a big deal for now, but it takes more click to do this.

Digital Crown indeed also functions as home button. Pressing it once does the job. But it does so much more of course; pressing it twice lets you switch between recently opened apps, pressing and holding it activates Siri etc. etc.

But it can indeed be a little 'frustrating'. Might be something Apple will change, for example by adding an option. In fact, it could be possible there already is such an option.

Unfortunately I can't test that. Don't own an Apple Watch at the moment. Mine is arriving very, very soon though (should be within two days).

Try swiping from left to right from the leftmost side of the watch. According to Apple's ui guidelines this should bring you to the previous screen.

No, AFAIK you can't return to the Glances screen by shortcut, just as you can't return to the multitasking screen or Control Centre on the iPhone. The only ways to do this would be with a swipe or click/double-click of the crown. Both of those inputs make more sense doing what they currently do than they would in returning you to the Glances screen.
