Will I need to install Lion, then Mountain Lion or can I jump straight from Mac OS to Mountain Lion?

Thanks

You can install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion straight from Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, if that is the version you mean with "Mac OS X". No need for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, as specified by Apple here.

That's an upgrade, the OP wants to install the OS "fresh", which I interpret as a clean install.

To perform an install of OS X clean, you will need to make a bootable USB drive with the ML installer.

That link refers to making a Lion USB, but the same procedure works for ML.
