There have been recent rumors. Nobody knows when, though, especially given that any prior plans may have been disrupted by the global pandemic.

I’m pretty sure I read that it’s more than rumors now and it was actually found in the code and release is imminent.

It’s not expected to be a huge upgrade unless you’re a gamer. Higher storage 64 (base model) or 128 and an A12 (or A13, I forget) chip.

Yep, the code “leak” was the source of the rumor. But the timing is completely unknown. And any plans may have been altered based on current circumstances. Though now that everyone is sitting home all day, Apple TV’s might sell well.

Indeed. Think it’s gonna be a website refresh like the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air and could be any day now. But maybe not lol.

Considering we are heading towards depression era unemployment, people won't be spending much money for non essential goods. I doubt we will see a new ATV in 2020. I would also bet the iPhone release will be pushed back, with numbers sold drastically down from 2019.

Exactly. I would buy a new model immediately provided they change the remote.

There has been new ATV rumors for a while now, but I wouldn't call it much of an upgrade based on the rumors.

I have a feeling that a new ATV might be more about Apple either lowering the price points, or increasing the profit margins.

There has been few rumors mentioning a new ATV with the A10X being replaced by the A12, but why use the A12 over the A12X or A12Z?

Considering the benchmarks show that the A12 is hardly an upgrade over the A10X (with some developers claiming that in real world use, the A10X actually performs better), I think that the change to the A12 has more to due with reducing cost due to economies of scale.

There isn't any current model Apple devices besides the ATV4K that uses the A10X, but there are plenty that use the A12. I suspect that Apple might end up using the A12 over the A12X because the A12 will have similar performance of the A10X, but be able to be produced at a much cheaper unit cost.

I just wonder if Apple will be dropping the price of the ATV4K(2), or keeping it relatively the same and just pocketing the savings.

It will come out the day after your return window closes. 😃

But seriously, iOS 13.4 beta referenced new Apple TV model, so I suspect the release is sooner (within the next month or two) than later (e.g., this fall).

I need to buy one for work but I’d rather get the latest one than buying an old one when another new one is supposed to come out soon. Fingers crossed

there’s not much more they can do with a streaming device. The current is already overpowered for what it does. A processor upgrade would only benefit folks that use the device for gaming. Even then I haven’t found a game that makes the current version struggle. More storage is nice though but I have everything in the cloud. HDMI 2.1, cool but only a handful of devices/TVs support it. WiFi 6? Cool, but I could easily stream 8k content already with my bandwidth. It won’t be a few years until what I mentioned is commonplace. And by then perhaps even a newer Apple TV would be here.

Point is if you need or want a Apple TV, get it. The current device is very capable. My Apple TV 3 in my daughters room still works fine and it’s nearly 8 years old. As I’ve said in several threads live in the here and now, otherwise you’ll always live in the wait for the next iteration mode. Any incremental change would be unnoticed by the vast majority of users. Cheers.

If apple was smart, they’d take advantage of the reality of the situation and offer Low cost Apple TV sticks that are plug and play and do the exact same thing. But how low cost can they get when the remote itself cost $60 to replace?

A10X isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Gaming bombed. Unless it cost less (Apple might be able to remove the fan etc with a new chip, especially a non X chip), I wouldn’t expect an upgrade. of course there’s prototypes, doesn’t mean they’ll come to market. If anything it’ll be the A12 as it’s used on so many devices and therefore can be bought cheaply, but it won’t be much of an upgrade for the user over the current gen, will just cost Apple less with a more generic chip and less components.

the original remote is still made and can be bought for $15. If anything that’s what would be packed in the cheap device.

I agree with the "buy if you need it" position, however, my issue is that Apple has refused to offer an inkling of a price drop on an item that's now 3 years old. What other company does this?

I need a new one as my ATV3 appears to be slowly dying - getting glitchy sometimes during playback. But I can't justify spending $250+ Canadian for a 3-year-old set. If they are rolling out a new one, you'd think they'd want to get rid of existing inventory and slash the prices.

I want quite a few of these myself, but I refuse to buy anything without ax wifi, so Ill just wait for next gen and resort to Samsungs smart-TV apps for now.Hopefully it wont be long though

I am not sure about any other company, but there has been plenty of Apple products that were a few years old the did not get a price drop.

So, this behavior isn't uncommon for Apple.

Also keep in mind, that for a streaming box, the almost three year old ATV4K is still way overpowered. It could be more than just a streaming box, but it seems that Apple may have screwed up any tvOS momentum to be more than just a simple streaming box back in 2015 with the choices made at the launch of tvOS.

But I can't justify spending $250+ Canadian for a 3-year-old set.
No one knows for sure, but I don't think the next ATV will be much of an upgrade based off of the rumors. I think it would be more about reducing costs by using the A12 than about better performance. According to the benchmarks, the A10X is about on par with the A12, and I have read that the A10X out performs the A12 when it comes to real world GPU performance.

I think the rumors, if true has more to do with dropping the A10X, which is not on any other product. Instead, Apple will use the A12 which has similar performance, but will most likely be much cheaper due to economies of scale, lowering the cost of producing the ATV.

Maybe Apple will pass that savings to the customer, but I have a feeling that they will just want to pad their profit margin.

If they are rolling out a new one, you'd think they'd want to get rid of existing inventory and slash the prices.
I have read somewhere about Apple selling the ATV4 and ATV4K almost at cost, so I doubt there will be a dramatic price drop on the current model.

A12 might offer about the same performance, but in a few years, the current model will be left out of an update and the new one will receive a new OS version.
Hardware might be similar, but the older will be left behind.

I wonder if with an A12/A13 if we could see it replace the Apple TV HD in the $150 slot and use the thinner case again.

Then I wonder if something like an A12Z or A14X would be powerful enough to make an Apple TV 8K. Though Apple probably doesn't much care about 8K at this point since there is zero content so realistically that power would only be used for gaming and I'm still not clear on Apple's goal there.

i had to buy because of need to extend monitor (usb c port failure), can't wait for new thing. Even so delivery kinda mess in coronova virus era.
** shop are close , near a month allready qurantine mode. :(

I'm not sure that Apple will quickly abandon the current 4k box. They released another update for the third 3rd Gen which came out 8 years ago.

What I meant is that it’ll always be abandoned first than a newer model... They won’t care if this model was sold in 2017 or in 2020... It’ll just be left out of the OS rollout.
so, buying a device now, knowing there are rumours of a new one around the corner, is accepting you'll be left behind earlier..

I understand but what can the new model offer in terms of streaming? Nothing I can think of.

If you don't need it now, I agree that waiting is not a bad idea. If you need it now, I say buy it.

There is nothing wrong with my hearing or eyesight so I bought another 4k Apple tv even though a new model is supposed to be coming. This might suddenly change so I'd rather enjoy top picture and sound quality now.
