Question: If you buy a Mac prior to the release of the OS upgrade, does Apple give a grace period where they'll give you a free upgrade?

I seem to recall something like that happening with Tiger, but can't be certain.

I'm really on the virge of buying a macbook pro, but would kick myself if I had to shell out another $130 in a couple months fot the latest & greatest version of the operating system.

They did do this with Tiger, but I can't remember what the grace period was. I also think there was a small charge, something to cover the cost of the disc and postage or something.

Yes, I'll upgrade. May wait a week or three for the cognoscenti to iron out the bugs though!

I'll be getting it on my new mini (still pending in as indicated in my footer), but will stay with Tiger on my G4 Powerbook.

Hmm, but now I qualify for the education discount so I might have to re-evaluate holding off my purchase just to save a few bucks.

I'll be getting it as soon as I can afford it. I skipped Tiger so I really can't wait to get spotlight and dashboard. Not to mention all the new Leopard features.

I'm ordering my new iMac 24'' next week, I doubt Leopard will be out by then. Hopefully they will give me some kind of voucher or something that i can take to the apple store around here and get Leopard for a discount or something if it comes out within the next couple weeks. anything beyond that, i can sorta accept to pay full price. But then again, no idea when it will be out, so I don't know when to base my purchase around (could be a ploy by Apple to bring in more revenue by still being able to charge people for software they don't know is coming out soon). I think that a release date will be announced next month (around/after the Superbowl ad) and will be released in March. You heard it from this PC-owning n00b first :)

I'll most likely get it... I like to have the newest features. When I first got Tiger, I didn't like it so I reverted back to Panther... then after using Panther for a couple days, I realized that I was missing those features that Tiger came with (Spotlight, Dashboard, iChat) and I realized Panther was just plain annoying me, so it is nice to have the upgrades.

Question

does anybody know the answer to my question above?

has there, historically, been a retro grace period for ppl. who buy a mac prior to a new OS update being released?

Thanks.

Two weeks comes to mind but it might be safer asking Apple.

I will definitely get it, but I'll probably wait a short while before upgrading, just to get a feel for how smooth the upgrade is.

Hell yes I will get it. Gotta stay on top of the technology mountain that is Apple
