Thinking this may be what I pick up for my grandson - well weighing this against something like an 8. He’s only 9, so we will have some extreme limits on it (internet limits), but my daughter is wanting him to have one since he and his siblings are at his dad’s on the weekends - she wants a way for him to easily get in touch with her or me in an emergency. He was wanting an iPod touch for games and camera, but I’m not willing to purchase something for that much money that is so limited - I’d rather just get a phone.

Just wondering when it’s coming, and if I should do that or get an 8. Any thoughts?

Everyone is expecting it in the next few weeks. My guess would be before the end of April.

If he’s only 9, why not consider getting a 6s or a 7 model? Would be a lot cheaper, it’s still a very capable device with the same levels of security etc. Both can be found brand new still as well, but good used versions may also be a good starting point if it’s his first smartphone in case it gets damaged/lost etc.

It’s coming. It’s going to be a ‘silent release’ where Apple won’t hold a keynote on it, but given the uncertainty of the pandemic/economy, there doesn’t have to be a ‘specific date’ for this phone to release, just like the iPad that no one expected that released randomly last week.

I can you this, you can expect 2020 to be a very unusual year for product releases, from manufacturing in China being delayed given their catastrophic state, not to mention, the US economy/overall health is not stable, and Apples Priorities bring strategic in terms of combating the pandemic, especially given California is ‘locked down’.

Thanks! I was just looking for a ballpark idea - it’s not something I’m doing in the next few weeks anyway, although I’m itching to spend money while on lockdown - not the best cure for boredom. ;-p

I was gonna go newer for a couple reasons; one being he really enjoys taking pictures and I think having a better camera would be cool (and i feel like it‘s pointless to consider a cheaper phone AND a camera). I will be able to put AppleCare on a new device.

This one has had an iPad since he was a toddler (they traveled a lot because of the military and I got it to keep him occupied on planes and in the car). I think he’s cracked one screen. He’s pretty good about taking care of his stuff.

Expect massive delays at this point due to sheep panicking over the virus

Your post is inaccurate. If you think about the economical situation right now, conservation with financials is pivotal, consumers are not spending money on things like smart phones, cars, any extracurricular money is probably being restructured or saved, given the uncertainty of where things are leading.

Now, you will have a few ‘Apple enthusiasts’ who will gladly purchase an Apple product no matter the situation, but 99% of consumers do not act on impulse Over Apple products when a lot of uncertainty is very apparent with consumers jobs/careers moving forward into 2020.

Depending on Apples stock allocations, I’d say this should be a launch where someone should be able to acquire this phone with no problem, also including there’s not much marketing with keynotes, because they don’t exist given all the cancellations. So with this phone being a ‘silent release’, I’d say it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Thanks for the posts. I wound up getting him an XR because ATT had them for $1 month if you added a new line (which I was gonna do anyway no matter which phone I bought). It was really a no-brainer. Now I just have to refrain from giving it to him before his birthday. ?

Factories are 90-95% back to normal in China according to FedEx VP. The manufacturing is there and air freight capacity is available. The bottleneck will be AppleCare, carrier, and reverse logistics, which are all domestic services. These things can be fixed because they're warehousing operations or remote support services.

Apple has already sunk NRE costs for the SE2, so every week of delay is costing them. It will definitely launch by the end of April in my opinion.
