When restoring from a backup, does it restore which songs you've downloaded?

If my handset gets lost or replaced, normally I have my iTunes settings backed-up and the same music gets put back on. Luckily *knock on wood*, this has never happened to me. However, what if this happens? Does it download the same songs?
