Just got my new 13” Air (loving it, though I’m developing new muscles in my hands). It was fully charged (100%), down to about 60% now.

I’ve read it‘s best for battery life not to charge it up to more than 80%, but just wondered what the best practice is for a first charge - should I let it go right down, or to say, 20% before putting it on charge?

Thanks!

Your battery should hold more than 80% of its charge after 1000 battery cycles. I wouldn't personally spend much time thinking about when to charge it, except when the electricity prices are low.

Ok thanks - I’ll let it go down to about 20% and then charge it, I seem to remember years ago there was a lot of talk about ‘calibrating’ a battery with first time use, maybe it’s less of an issue with modern batteries.

You do not need to let it go to 20%. Just charge it when not using it. Apple gives you the choice to limit to 80%. You are overthinking the charging process. Never deplete the battery below 10%.

I don't think it matters how low, as long as it's not 100 percent all the time. There is a "charge to 80 percent max" setting in battery health now, to prevent that. Mainly for people who keep it docked all the time.
