When to buy / register Apple Care?

Hi - Does AppleCare kick in on the date you buy it or does it automatically follow on once the standard warranty runs out?

I'm guessing the latter but I'm buying a new iMac with AppleCare this week and don't want to end up doubling up on the warranty if I register AppleCare straight away!

So don’t buy it, you have it 1 year. Extend it later.
Don’t even think you can buy it double on same machine serial.

AppleCare starts after the first year. There's no risk of doubling down so you can buy it now or buy it at the end of the first year, it doesn't matter.

Applecare must be bought and registered within the first year.
Applecare + needs to be purchased 60 days but it includes accidental damage.
