The original AirTag was announced during an Apple Event in April 2021, alongside the iMac with the M1 chip, an updated Apple TV 4K, and more. Following a four-year wait, Apple reportedly plans to release an AirTag 2 this year.

A few months ago, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple was aiming to release the AirTag 2 around the middle of 2025. While he did not offer a more specific timeframe, that means the AirTag 2 could be announced by the end of June.

Below, we recap what to expect from the AirTag 2:

  • With a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the AirTag 2 is expected to have up to 3× longer range compared to the current AirTag. The chip debuted in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding for People feature that can help you to find your friends in crowded places, and it offers a range of up to 200 feet/60 meters.
  • The new AirTag's built-in speaker is expected to be more difficult to remove, as a stalking-related safety measure.
  • The new AirTag is rumored to have improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro, but there are no specific details about this.
  • No major design changes or rechargeable battery are expected.

In the U.S., a single AirTag costs $29, while a pack of four AirTags costs $99. However, the AirTag is frequently on sale on Amazon. It is unclear if the AirTag 2 will cost more, but it should remain one of Apple's more affordable products.

Whenever it launches, there is one thing I know for certain:

Built for Apple Intelligence with the all-new U2 chip, AirTags 2 feature powerful upgrades to the advanced tracking system, with Find My quickly accessing useful features, and a big boost in battery life.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today announced AirTags 2 and the all new AirTags Pro, built for Apple Intelligence, the easy-to-use personal intelligence system that understands personal context to deliver location tracking intelligence that is helpful and relevant while protecting user privacy. The AirTags lineup also introduces location control, which brings new ways to capture locations, and will help users quickly find devices or learn about objects or places around them faster than ever before. The powerful tracking system features a custom designed U2 ultrawideband chip featuring Apple Intelligence, giving users two trackers in one, while a new tracking system enables the pre-crime unit. Next-generation Tracking Styles help users personalize their locations, and spatial location and movement capture allows users to relive life’s precious memories with remarkable precision on Apple Vision Pro. The new U2 chip delivers a huge leap in performance and efficiency, enabling more demanding performance than ever before seen in a.location tracker, as well as a big boost in battery life.

You are going to love them.

I realize competitors like Tile already boast this but I hope future iterations of AirTag will become smaller. Unlike most of Apple's other products, AirTags could really benefit from Apple's obsession with thinness -- would be nice not feeling like the Princess and the Pea every time I sit with my wallet in my back pocket.

There's a few competitors who I wish apple would buy. AirTags are great, but I doubt I'll replace before my current ones die. I've been quite please. There's a credit card sized thing with Find My, and I wish apple would innovate in this area. Water resistant version would be sweet - I had a tile on a dog die the first time it went to get a drink.

The Watch variation, applied to this, would be amazing. A sporty waterproof version similar to the current, a 'nano' that's barely larger than the battery, and one with upgraded range, would give a lot of diversity. I'd definitely buy more for other use cases. Same one with more range? Cool, but iterative.

The best thing Apple could do for their bottom line is to create their own thin batteries for the AirTag. Only Apple batteries would work in the device.

You still use a wallet?? Everything (including my car keys) has been replaced by my iPhone. My wife uses her Apple Watch...:p

They really need to make other form factors like a card or tab. I’m beholden to Pebblebee for those conveniences.

Make it louder and give it an adjustable volume. I don’t lose my keys much anymore because I have established a what I do when I get home routine.

When I do lose them is when I get grabbed the second I walk in the door and they get left someplace really random.

So even with the directional I need something loud because usually sitting under something that I had to move for the family.

If instead of a CR2032 they used something like a CR2412, then it could be notably thinner. Of course they store less energy, so that'd be an issue.
CR2412 would probably force the diameter of the airtag to grow. CR2025 or CR2016 are both pretty poplar sizes that would be the same diameter, but thinner, so it would possibly allow them to make the airtag smaller. As you mentioned they have a considerably lower capacity so they would likely need to be replaced more often unless Apple came up with a way to use a lot less energy.

I’m sceptical of the range claim. 3x improvement? I can’t imagine a coin cell powered AirTag having a range comparable to two iPhones working in tandem. The iPhones have huge batteries in comparison as well. Also maybe the Ultra-Wideband 2 chip is higher quality (binning) in the iPhones compared to the AirTags.

The only thing I want from an Airtag2 is for it to be much thinner.
If that has to be at the cost of endurance, no thanks.
I’m using AirTags in backpack, luggage, car keys and a bike. I really don’t need them to be much smaller than they already are.
