When to Purchase iMac?

When would you recommend purchasing an iMac? I realize that Apple upgraded the speed in the iMac line a few months ago. If i was to buy a new iMac this week, would it be a good move? Do you expect a new one soon?

Go for if you need it. There would not be an update till January next year if not later.

The only known common issues with iMacs are screen bleeding and I was able to get a perfect one after two replacements. However, you might not even notice that unless you go look for it.
 
Buy one now!

if you have the means and wish to get a great machine get one of the new iMacs.. my 24'' screen is so gorgeous.. its just prime.

they're great machines that will be around for a very long time.

do NOT wait for an upgrade if you need a new machine now.
 
new imac now

I just got a new imac 2.8; 24 inch sreen. I was a pc user, I can't believe the difference. I will add more ram in the future. What impress me the most is the load time, about 30/40 seconds. My pc took about 5/6 min.

Get one now especially if you are a student. You can't beat getting a new iMac and a free iPod touch.

The best advice on this situation I've heard from other people is "Don't waste time worrying about when the next best computer is going to come out. You will never purchase one and get to enjoy it."

It's a fact that they upgrade their machines regularly, you just need to bite the bullet and get one of these great machines. Good luck with your decision.
 
Echoing what has already been said, there really hasn't been a better time to buy than now. Unless you want to wait 8 months or more, you aren't going to be seeing anything better.
 
I don't expect a new one until next year sometime... I would def. get one now. The refurbs are always a good idea.
 
I just bought the 24" 3.06 a few weeks ago. I love it. My first Mac after over 20 years using PC's. If you have the money buy one now. Why wait....
 
Now's the Time

I have a 24"/2.4GHz/320GB iMac from last summer that I'm giving to a family member in need. I just ordered a 24"/3.06GHz/1TB monster as its replacement. 🙂

Where's that info coming from? There will be another update this year but it will be after the notebooks are updated, so expect it around August/September

And where is your info coming from? =P

I'm willing to bet my money that they don't update until next year. And if they DID end up updating this yr, I'd expect it to be in Nov/Dec, not Aug/Sep. They are not going to update it after just 4 months... that would piss off too many ppl and probably would mean the update would be less significant anyway.

My prediction: next update between Dec 2008 - March 2009

I don't think updating it 4 months after a previous update is unheard of...In 2003, Apple updated that iMac in September, then again in November.

In Previous years, the iMacs were updated (mid year) as follows (minus early year updates):
2003 - September
2004 - August
2005 - October
2006 - September
2007 - August

So if following this pattern, maybe they would be updated in October?

I think it'll just be updated chipset/CPU/Graphics(maybe). The case was redesigned last year so I doubt it'll be updated again soon 🙂

1) Your closer to the most recent update than to the next one, whether it's Oct. or Jan.

2) Newer, faster chips. You never know what apple has up its sleeve, though. Of course, anything like a touch screen is likely to be held until MacWorld in January, or beyond.
 
Hmmm this talk of the iMac being updated before 12months is even over is pushing me into the Mac Pro as my next Mac.
 
To turn the question around. You should wait to get a new iMac if your current machine still does what you need it to, and/or the current iMac is missing something you just can't live without. Otherwise, you'll just drive yourself crazy waiting for the "perfect" time.
 
drive these macs into the ground..

use all 3 years of apple care and then consider buying a new machine - they're not outdated so fast that you need a new one every year (at least in my personal, and professional use)

i bought the newest iMac and will have it for a LONG time - its an investment for me, as it should be for most people

I agree. I have the mid-2007 24" iMac which I purchased on the day of its release in August, 2007. I put Applecare on it and intend to think about upgrading in August, 2010 when it runs out. 😉
 
I'm thinking about doing this also.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my white 20' iMac, but I want to sell it before the value goes down even more. I have a 2.0 core duo one, so it's getting there.

I'm looking to get a refurbished 24' iMac... the 2.4 one.

It usually just shows up, but rumors appear here and other mac-centric sites in the days and weeks leading up to an assumed update day, which will be pretty much every Tuesday starting about 3 months from now.
