Hello Mac Community,

I have had trouble with carpal tunnel recently and trying to implement Mac accessibility features but having trouble with one of them and wondering if this is how it's supposed to work or if I'm not doing something right. Any feedback would be appreciated.

When I use Dictation only, the speech to text feature works great. But when I switch to Voice Control then dictation doesn't work as before. By the way, when you turn on Voice Control it disables the Dictation feature (that's controlled on the System Preferences > Keyboard window) and Dictation ends up being controlled through the Voice Control feature.

How can I have dictation work just as well as when I use Voice Control?

Here's a video of my troubleshooting test:

Btw is this the best category to post in, I wasn't sure.

An old thread, but I've just found an answer when searching the internet for any developments to Voice Control on Mac.

In short, the reason is because Voice Control is not optimised for all the types of text boxes (which happen to be made in different ways).

Here is the link to the full article:

Apple has claimed in some of its publicity for Voice Control that you can easily dictate into any text box. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Dictation does not work in every text box when accessing websites via Safari. For example, Whatsapp Web works great but dictating into WordPress, Google Search and Google Translate doesn’t provide a good dictation experience. Accuracy is poor and there are no spaces inputted between dictated words. There will be many other text boxes on other websites that also don’t play well with Apple’s speech recognition engine.

As of me, I use Dictation because Voice Control is currently US English only. (But even if it supported my languages, I still find it underdeveloped and not ready for use.)

Hope this helps.

Big Sur MacBook Air same problem here.

You can have voice control or a semi working dictate but not both but not both. (I'm using the dictate right now in Firefox so I can't get any controls or editing to work) Press return enter press enter tap enter enter key

I'm going to have to try Dragon naturally speaking on windows next. This makes me very sad.

(if you are super diehard. Can tell Siri when you want to turn voice control on and off and then have a dictate button and the dictate button will work when voice control is turned off. Insane, I know. And you still don't have any ability to really edit while dictating like you're doing dragon.)
