In the US, changing your number was required when switching carriers until 2003, when mobile number portability was introduced.

If you re in the US, just get a Google Voice number and you are set. You don't have to worry much about your actual number.
I have my Google Voice number since it was grand central, around 2005-2006 I think. Since then, I don't know how many times I have switched SIM and number, but the number I have for people is still the same.

Internationally, it's a bit tricky. Luckily in some countries, I can top up a prepaid number online to keep it valid.

I've had two mobile numbers ever since I starting using cell phone's. My first number I had for a few years, then I switched from Cingular to Verizon and lost my original number since it was before we could port numbers. So I was given the number I currently have now and have been with it ever since.

I change my numbers often, but since I use Google Voice it really doesn't matter what my cell phone number is, as long as I can be reached via my Google Voice number.

I have had the same number that I ported to google voice for 10 years. I do however get a new sim with a new number every month.

Is it possible to port that number out from Google voice and to another VoIP provider? Just in case Google changes some policy or something that you don't like?

I suppose so, I've ported my number to and from Verizon a few times without an issue.

I changed as soon as I got my 6S last month. Wanted to change network and couldn't be bothered to get my number ported. Just need to memorise this new number.

Fun story! I didn't really intend on getting a new number.

Some nice young fella pulled a gun on me. His buddy then put his hands in my pockets and took all of my belongings, including my wallet and cell phone. He then told me to run or he would start shooting me.

I never got the phone back, and the thief even used it to make some calls to commit some other crimes.

I got another phone, and with it a new number.

Wow! Glad you're alright.

I've had my number since 2001 when I switched from Alltel (who were later absorbed by Verizon) to AT&T (the original AT&T before the Cingular > at&t thing)... back in the days before number porting as possible. I moved myself and my wife to AT&T and we have the same numbers that we got in that move.

I am getting close to retiring, and will definitely change my number when I retire. My current number is posted all over my company's databases for both phone calls and support call-out pages.

Left Vodafone and joined O2 in 2004, wanted to port my Voda number but they wanted me to pay a fee so i told them to keep it. Kept my O2 number after changing providers 3yrs ago.

Don't see myself changing anytime soon.

I'm game.

Got tired of Sprint's lock on the coverage in the area I lived in at the time in the early 2000s. Found a phone without a battery in it (Nokia 6160 - ATT), which I happen to have the 6180 (Sprint). Swapped batteries, went to the ATT store, signed up, and funnily enough, was able to get the same phone number that my parents landline number was (different area code). Made it easy for family to remember the number, and gave me a bit of home.

Had the Sprint number since 1998, and the ATT number since 2002. Kept that number until I moved again - all of this before number porting came into play. I've had the same number since.

BL.

I have 3 lines

Primary line had same number since 2000. Originally with sprint in 2000. Ported to Cingular/att in 2004. Still same number in 2015

2nd line started with aerial communications (one of voice stream/T-Mobile precursors) back in Kansas in 1997. Had same number till 2007. Switch number when I ported to my brother add a line with T-Mobile also for blackberry curve promo Finally canceled T-Mobile line in 2011.

3rd line with Verizon started in 2011. Still have same number in 2015.

So I've usually Carried two phones with me.

Some 617 numbers opened up so we put the entire family on them. I will probably not let those go, even if we do move. Born in California but Boston is where I feel at home.

2009. My girlfriend at the time didn't like that my ex(es) could get a hold of me if she (they) wanted. Probably goes without saying that she was a little too clingy for my tastes. Seemed worth it at the time though.

Similar although the ex did get hold of me......she wouldn't stop calling. Her record was 264 calls in a day. Had to get a police report and then o2 changed my number.

My first phone # was my fav phone number. My dad got me the phone for Christmas in 2001.

In 2008 when the iPhone 3G came out, I gave my old plan to my friend and opened up a new line with data. They couldn't port my number to another account so I got a random number I wasn't too happy with because the area code wasn't the primary area code for my area.

A year later I changed it and got a number that I really liked with a rare area code. I'll keep this forever.

I am amazed at how many let their phone service did to not paying the bill.

Just not smart. I know a real estate guy that let that happen. Can not imagine how much money it cost him in the long run.

Amazing. Totally amazing.

Circa 1999 when I went from my parent's account to my own. I believe I was originally with Alltel, then Cingular, then ATT, then VZW.

Every 2 years when my contract is up. In Mexico they distribute the initial new iPhone's stock to new contracts and let the renewals waiting for up to 4 months. So I just change companies.

They tried to keep you captive taking 2 to 3 weeks to solve your application for number keeping when switching companies until a recent ruling making them do it on one day from now on. In the past days you got a new contract but no number because the new company was waiting for the old one to release it.

I've had the same cell number since I got my first cell phone, sometime around 1995-ish. Got it back in the days when the store would show you a bunch of available numbers and let you pick your favorite. I picked this number because it had lots of 2's in it, and have never had an occasion to change it since.

Haven't changed it since I signed up for Google Voice and I have no idea when that was other than a long time ago.

I was on T-Mobile prepaid until about 2008 (which was surprisingly good and cheap for mid-2000s prepaid), but they weren't able to port out my number when I set up postpaid service with AT&T. AT&T managed to get me a number from my hometown, and I've had it since. I just ported it to T-Mobile over the weekend and it was easy.

I have a Google Voice number I rarely use that is from Los Angeles back when the service was GrandCentral - no intention of changing that number, although I might want to get a local one when they roll out the new 463 area code....

Have only changed it once. Gave the number to my son when he was old enough to have a phone. Had to be 4-5 years back. I had same number since.
