I’ll probably not be interested in an iPad mini 7 unless they switch back to the old aspect ratio (and fix the jelly scrolling, of course). The 6 is just too narrow.

I’m also partial to the Touch ID home button, specifically on the iPad mini, because it allows picking it up one-handed while also directly unlocking it.

Lastly, I wasn’t fond about the changed location and orientation-dependence of the volume buttons on the 6.

I had wanted to upgrade from the 4 to the 6, but it was a downgrade in too many aspects, so I upgraded to a 5 instead while they were still available.
Actually I always found when reading books the mini 6 showed portrait representation to be enlarged compare to the mini 5 which might have been wider it still resulted in the same page showing text smaller to read.

- Qualcomm X65 modem or newer in the cellular models, because they currently don’t support AT&T’s new 3.45 – 3.55 GHz spectrum.

- Millimeter wave 5G. (It’s getting increasingly common!)

- Wi-Fi 6E.

- Bluetooth 5.3. (Greatly improves Handoff reliability, in my experience.)

- Better screen, especially with higher refresh rate and either OLED or mini LED.

Exactly the same experience and solution

Whats interesting with the difference of opinion between Touch ID and Face ID is that either solution can not be ideal. I modified my Targus protective case so that Touch ID was more reliable but at the same time found Face ID more often failed than worked. It really depends on a bit of luck it seems, perhaps even skill. ;)

Face ID is okay on the iPhone where you can swipe up with your thumb while holding the phone, or on a large iPad that you need to hold with two hands anyway. But the iPad mini has a size where neither applies.

I can see why Apple moved from a 7.9" screen to a 8.3". This is an old 2018 article still it clearly shows how that size offers OLED even 5 years ago. Given its age OLED 8.3"panels must be pretty cheap by now.

I’m glad it no longer seems like the mini will get axed. I love mine. It’s great for reading with! Smaller and more compact than a regular iPad so it’s easier to hold, yet a larger screen than the largest iPhone. I find myself using this more and more for reading than my phone, which is being relegated to just quick reading and short texts and emails.

For pics though, iPhone will always be better for that (mind you, not as good as a DSLR, but I’m more likely to be carrying my phone than my DSLR).

Hope apple keeps the mini around for a long time.

The current iPad Mini 6 is great, I love mine!

I can't think of very many improvements for a Mini 7, other than a faster processor ..... the Mini 6 already has "latest" hardware improvements like support for Apple Pencil 2 and also USB-C port.

Possibly a better camera, but other than Zoom, Facetime, and other videoconferencing uses, I don't see the iPad Minis being used as a primary camera/video device.

They do need to address (and fix) the so-called iPad Mini jelly scrolling issue.... which I have not seemed to notice on mine (fortunately).
I can’t stand my iPad mini 6. The jelly scrolling ruins reading a book on it which is the only purpose I have for it.

I really want to get an iPad Mini to replace my first generation iPad Pro. I want the smaller size. I won't buy another device with TouchID, though. I really hope they release an updated Mini with FaceID.

The Mini should get an M-series processor soon.

The 6th gen iPad Mini is really an iPad Air Mini. When it came out, the iPad Air 4 was current, and the Mini's processor slightly beat the Air's but then the Air 4 had been released nearly a year earlier. Later, the Air was updated to the Air 5 with the M1 processor. The Mini should get the M1 or even M2 processor before the Air is updated to Air 6.

That said, I'm less knowledgeable that many macrumors forum participants, and I'm guessing your conjectures are more likely than mine. What do you think?

I just wish they’d up the storage space to 512 to 1TB so that I can use it more as video camera replacement. Im using the 11 Pro now and while it’s great, it’s still just a bit too big for that use.

If they do release an update this year, I think it’ll literally just be to put the A17 in mostly for efficiency improvements and… thats it.
Maybe hover support for the pencil, but outside of that I don’t expect anything else.
They absolutely will not put 120 Hz in the iPad mini though, that’s something they won’t do.
Yeah, I can see Apple doing the same thing they did with iPad mini 6/A15 and drop in a downclocked A17. I don’t see them adding ProMotion to the iPad mini 7 unless they want to reduce/eliminate the jelly scrolling issue and that’s the only way. Knowing Apple, they probably won’t so the best we can hope for is the improved battery life from the A17 and maybe some camera improvements. Okay, maybe a new color too or new colors with a more vibrant punch instead of the pastel colors we have now? Maybe there’s another hardware fix Apple could implement for the jelly scrolling issue?

Agreed. I couldn’t get past the jelly. While all iPads have them, it was noticeable by far the most on the mini and my brain couldn’t ever get past it. That said, I’ve been using pro motion pros since 2017 so it probably just got used to that refresh rate.

  • @4x 120Hz OLED (I’m dreaming)
  • Taptic Engine
  • Larger vertical display area (in landscape) so the onscreen keyboard doesn’t take up 3/5 of the display
  • MagSafe charging
  • Front FaceTime UHD camera and FaceID positioned for landscape use
  • Better ambient light sensor placement, or more of them so they’re not accidentally covered by hands
  • Better ‘palm’ rejection, occasionally I hold the top left corner of the display which springs the current app to the top
  • More speakers and microphones, or better placement, again just holding the device in landscape covers some of them
  • A17 SoC with 8GB RAM (hopefully A17 is a bigger upgrade than A16) not too bothered about windowed multitasking but enough to bridge the inevitable long gap to the next hardware refresh
I'd buy that iPad Mini in a heartbeat if it had all of this!

"the seventh-generation iPad mini is the iPad model that is most actively rumored to potentially launch this year."

"As a result, the current iPad mini will contain relatively modern chip hardware throughout the entirety of this year."

This text reads like it wasn't written by a human.
Maybe ChatGPT wrote it? ;)

Uh-huh…. At what price point? 🧐
