I want to know when Apple will release the next iPhone and also what name will be given to it. Do you think Apple will go ahead and name it iPhone 12?

Well the next iPhone is the one at the end of March...

Possible names are SE2, iPhone 9 or simply iPhone. Even at this late stage, no one really knows, let alone the main iPhone event in September but iPhone 12 is expected.

Yeah, I mean the iPhone 12

iPhone 5G

Apple won't call it something boring like "iPhone 12." They'll want to promote the biggest selling point, the 5G radio.

A ‘name’ for the iPhone title and number are two separate things. Apple has always primarily continued on with the numbering scheme, because it’s the most easiest way for the consumer to identify the newest iPhone from the older model when they devalue.

Now, last year for 2019 they used ‘Pro Max’, and used the advantage to the word ‘Pro’ to identify the best camera, so I suspect they will probably incorporate some type of title this year with 5G being promoted.

I don't know about that. They probably don't want to risk people thinking it's some throwback to the iPhone 5/5s/5c line.

I'm not sure how many consumers will confuse 5G with an iPhone introduced eight years ago. I think everyone in the market for a premium smartphone has heard of 5G. And the risk to Apple? A small number of people mistakenly believe iPhone 5G is an updated iPhone 5 and hold off upgrading? If Apple can successfully sell the iPhone Xs and XR next to each other, I don't think selling a 5G device and calling it 5G will be difficult.

Get a job at Apple in a department that has a "need to know." Then you'll know, but not be able to tell anyone.

It's kind of amazing that people ask these kinds of questions in this way, as if Apple doesn't have a long, public history of not announcing these things in advance. Do you want to know the latest rumors and speculation? No problem, people are happy to oblige.

Apple is not going to publicly announce the new name until a media event that will likely take place in early September. At that event they will likely announce that the new models can be purchased about one week following the media event.

Now, there are fears that the coronavirus may delay the usual schedule, but it's still too early to know that.

Before that media event there will be plenty of reports here at Mac Rumors - leaks, rumors, etc. Some will turn out to be correct, others will be incorrect. But in late February there is no way to "know." If you want to know these things 6-7 months in advance... see if Doc Brown will loan you his Delorean.

What would be the most logical, in my head, is 11s, 11s Pro, and 11s Pro Max. Unless we're just ending the S naming scheme now.

Oh, and the March one, SE 2.

I’m guessing September 2020.
X wasn't released in September, it was released in November. The iPhone 4S was released in October and screwed up a lot of iPhone 5 and 5S preorders since most were a month shy of upgrade eligibility.

I don't know... You might be surprised. Companies can be very picky about how the marketing of their products could cause even a subconscious negative bias.

Those are the two big mysteries! Hey, on MacRumors we even have a handle on the supply chain inside China. We have everything BUT those two details. 😁
