Do you expect CarPlay to be open to other navigators (Tomtom, Google Maps, Waze, etc.), music and video players (youtube, pandora, soundcloud, deezer).. even streaming apps usable when the car is stopped (netflix, hbo, etc..)

Why is not Apple unlocking the full potential of CarPlay? Do you expect some of this for iOS 12? Or never will happen?

CarPlay is open to 3ed party apps and there are several (looks like 20). It is up to the 3ed party to write the app and submit to Apple for approval. Whether Apple approves or not is .......well up to Apple.

Hi, seems that your statement is not totally certain. I had this reply from Tom Tom Navigation developer team such a time ago.. :

Unfortunately CarPlay features are not yet available to navigation app developers. As soon as this situation changes you can be assured that we will be investigating the opportunity to add support for CarPlay to our apps.

So, it seems that some parts of CarPlay, maybe the necessary for navigation apps for example, are not liberated from Apple to let the developers do their work.. at least this is my understanding in the issue

I didn’t know Overcast was on CarPlay. Now I want to upgrade my receiver even more now!

Yeah it's up to Apple which apps they want to allow in. They don't want Google Maps in there, for example, because then people would choose it over Apple Maps, which is unfortunate. I'm surprised they let Spotify in tbh.

Apple Maps is crap compared to Google Maps, at least here in Europe.. what is more, car navigation apps which need a data connection instead of offline downloaded maps are quite bad idea, as there are many situations in which you could only have gps signal but no 3G/4G...

I was so excited to get carplay 2 years ago. Went out of my way to find the exact model VW that had it. Since then, im disappointed everyday. The Siri voice is now so much quieter than anything else and no setting will fix it. The messages app shows messages that I have long deleted from my phone. I submit bug reports and feedback app and get no response. Carplay is just another half assed idea that Apple seems to have forgotten.

Yep, same feeling here... another -not finished yet- good concept

And, maybe this is my iPhone 6 fault, the car system runs smoother than my phone running CarPlay, the Siri invocation is sloooow, and the apps switching is also laggy...

Bravo!!!!

Thinking on installing the beta, just to try google maps or tomtom in CarPlay! :)[/QUOTE

Unfortunately I don't think apple allows apps signed for beta ios, in this case 12, in the app store until the os is officially released. So unless you have a way of getting a beta copy of the app from google or waze you probably will have to wait.

Google has not updated Google Maps to work and Apple is probably not ready to allow it yet either. Also it could or will probably be close to iOS 12 GM release before this happens.
