It won't be sooner. They don't want to advertise a product they can't sell yet.
After some creative searching, I found other people speculating the same. Is it relatively painless to return a phone if I don't like the size?
Yes, Apple is typically lenient on this and you can get both at the same time and decide what is best for you and within 14 days return one and keep the other.

Display models won’t be in store til Friday. Depends if you ordered online or bought in store. Online orders have to be mailed back.
Actually no. You can return online orders to the Apple Store in person. I have done this before. They just have to go on a different POS but it's doable. No need to mail it back.

That might been the past but on their P.O.S devices they have go to tap on "Online Returns" and they should be able to process it there that way.
