I have an iPP 12.9 2017 but another family member uses it to watch news. Good excuse to buy a new one but if I buy an upcoming 2019 model and they release one that supports 5G in a year, I will be unhappy. I read that there is no major changes in this year’s models.

I understand your feelings. I’m waiting for the next 12.9 in the hope it’s stronger etc. In many cases you can keep the same iPhone or iPad for years and you’re not really missing out as such as the changes are usually fairly small.

It seems the move from 4G to 5G is a huge one and I personally would want to wait for the iPad to be ready for 5G as that is an important tech milestone. It’s a bit sad but the iPhones coming next month (and iPads if they end up being released too) will just be placeholders, there for a year treading water until the ones ready for the ‘next big thing’ 5G, are released.

I hope the 5G iPads come soon and are amazing!

2020 at the earliest... if Apple actually releases an iPad Pro in 2020.

Could be tomorrow, could be the Day After Never. I am 100% certain that it is nearly impossible to predict when Apple will release anything.
Won’t be tomorrow. Apple didn’t have the 5G chips. Earliest is 2020.

Obviously Apple purchase of the Intel modem team was a step in this direction. But until more providers have expanded 5G coverage I am not holding my breath. I think end of 2020 at the earliest.

5G coverage is very limited so far. Also, you have to have a 5G contract and they are apparently ridiculously expensive.

Do you live in a 5G market?
Most of us don’t, but also most of us would probably want to keep the very expensive iPad Pro for as long as possible.

It would be very unfortunate if one bought one and then was expected to buy another one a year or two later to be able to take advantage of 5G.

I think many of us are trying to ‘future proof’ for an event we know is coming.
