You're correct. There is no education discount on refurbs. But they were just stating that the cost of a brand new one with the educational discount applied was more expensive than the cost of the refurb.

FYI, if you use Discover credit card, you do get 5% back if you go through Shop Discover. It does say it does not include iMacs, but I did it anyways and got the $86 credit on the base refurb 27".

I do a similar thing, but my card gives me 1% cash back, but also doubles warranty, so on top of my ~$25 cash back, my imac will be covered for 2 years instead of one year :)

yes, Discover also doubles warranty. I think most credit cards do now (at least all the ones I have do).
 
Yesterday, I received my iMac; unfortunatelly, it is going back to a store :( I noticed a huge color discrepancy at the bottom of the screen - 1/3rd of the screen. What happens is that the white at the bottom is not white, but yellowish - very noticable when working with any sort of documnents or reading pdf's. This kind of blows, as the same models are no longer available in the refurb store, so this will be a long wait time before I get anything different.
