Rumors have been abound that the next iPhone will have a smooth sheet of glass design with a home button and mic and camera all somehow embedded in a display running more or less edge to edge.

That would sound great...in an iPad. Apple could probably even fit close to as many pixels as will be in their new (rumored) medium sized 10" iPad in the 9.7 form factor if the display ran edge to edge...which to me would be the perfect iPad.

Is a sheet of glass iPad on the horizon? When will it be introduced? Might it be introduced before the iPhones or after? What other features might such an iPad have?

Aside from battery and circuitry, they would have to build something that won't break or scratch and we are a LONG way from that happening.

I guess you need some bezel to hold an iPad comfortably. And a case would probably cover the edges of the display. It surely would look sexy naked though!

As long as they program the screen to not react to touch on the edges most of the time, as a virtual bezel.

Apple ceaselessly strives to make the iPads and iPhones thinner and thinner. The logical evolution is not a sheet of glass, but a razor blade. I fully expect to be able to shave with the edge of my iPhone 17S.

They can't make them thinner forever up until the point it becomes invisible, so eventually they'll stop focusing on making it thinner and lighter and they'll focus on other things.

Somehwere in the sheet of glass you still have to have circuitry and do not forget the battery. I can see edge to edge display, not that I would want it, but we are a while away from our iPads being a single sheet of glass.

I think they are pretty amazing now.

I agree - its sounds cool but having at least a small bezel allows better holding of the device and what not.

I'm ready for a bezel-less design!

I've been thinking about how I told my tablet devices and, for me, the bezel serves no purpose. The entire front of the device could be a screen and I wouldn't run into any issues.

I'' not saying this is true for everybody, but for me, I would certainly welcome it - especially if they made the devices smaller. If they kept the same screen size and conformed the dimensions of the device to fit the screen without a bezel, the iPad Pro 9.7 would be even smaller!

As much as I'd love it, though, I think we're still pretty far away.

I'm sort of confused. When I read the OP I was thinking like almost how the jet black 7 looks, like one solid body, only each side of it glass. When I read the comments it seems everyone else interpreted it as a transparent sheet of glass.

If you mean front and back glass to make it appear to be one uniform piece of material... I think this will happen in the next few years. I really wish the iPads had the styling of the 6-7 iPhones and I really, really, really wish it was all glass on both sides. If you mean transparent glass I think it's going to be awhile given all the internals can't really be transparent and the battery alone has to be so big.

Hmm at that point you'll need a permit to legally carry your iPhone. Also it will cut you when you try to hold it. I hope Apple doesn't go that far.
