I'm waiting to buy a computer.
I think I've decided on the MacBook. I can't cough up 3 grand Canadian for the MBP.

Can anyone comment on:
video watching speeds and quality? (both DVD and MPG)
Photo Editing (with photoshop and Illustrator)
Video Editing (never done it before, but suspect I'll have to)
Music Composition (Reason, CuBase)

Anyone have ANY idea when they'll update it though? The configuration has been the same for sooooo long, they're due!

The big MacBook rumors discussed on this site can be found here...and you can see how reliable the rumors have been.

The MacBook was released less than 6 months ago so I'll give you a ... ... and move on!

Oh and yeah the update is tomorrow like mentioned above.

The tasks you've listed (heavy Photoshop use, video editing, sound composition) really lend themselves much more to a Macbook Pro much more than a standard Macbook.

That said, if your budget only allows a Macbook, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Macbook is NOT updated for the rest of this year. If Merom supplies are as low as they appear to be, and Apple doesn't appear in any rush with their noteboooks, don't be schocked if Apple puts the best available updates into the MBP first, and updates the Macbook line again in January. Macbooks are FLYING off the shelves in their current configuration, so there's no reason for Apple to make changes now.

My advice, if you want a Macbook, and can't afford an MBP, go ahead and buy it. It's not gonna get much better anytime soon. But I'd highly recommend you cram as much RAM as you can afford into that bad boy (2GB if possible) because your higher-end visual Apps will drag a bit with the non-dedicated graphics card and the extra RAM will really help with that.
