Well, I would never say never. Apple is unpredictable on when they will release new hardware. I can see them releasing an M1 or M2 16" MacBook Pro in the future. Perhaps as early as sometime in 2021 (which is not that far off).

No M1 16" MacBook Pro. Wouldn't make ANY sense and I would be very, very, very, very, very, very surprised, if Apple releases one.

I was hoping for an update to the 16” or a price reduction since the specs are kinda old. Maybe increase standard ram to 32gb on the i9 variant, like how the 2013 15” had 16gb standard on the higher end config.

It will more than likely be the long rumored redesign. There is no need for it to be so thick and heavy with the M chip. The M1 13 inch models released this year are basically the guinea pig Macs. Now that they have proven themselves I expect to see great things for the 16 inch. Hopefully they won’t be lazy and recycle the old chassis. It’s just too thick and heavy. Some people have rumored WWDC. I say why not?

Why have an M1 13-inch, but no M1 16-inch? I thought Apple was trying to get independent from Intel.
Because the M1 has memory, video output and Thunderbolt limitations. It'll likely be a modified M1 (M1x) or the next gen (M2). Likely something which can handle 32GB to 64GB RAM, dual (hopefully triple) displays and dual Thunderbolt controllers. Perhaps a discrete GPU based off their integrated design for higher GPU performance.

Why is that? Apple have said they are going to move the entire Mac line to Apple Silicon. Unless you are referring to M1 variants such as M1X (or whatever they are called) as not M1.

M1X, M1Z, M1Whatever, M2 but no M1.
OP didn't asked about an M-chip, he/she specifically asked about a 16" MacBook Pro with an M1-chip.

Many people seem to use the term M1 to refer to the generation, not the specific chip, which seems reasonable as we don’t know the full naming convention. It is likely it will follow the A series naming convention, but may not. “M1” is easier to write than “M1-something” or “M1 family”.

Asking “When” rather than “If” makes more sense if referring to the M1 generation than the existing chip called M1, so would default to generously assuming that is what was meant. I think it is very clear we won’t get the current chip in the 16” model as it will get a more powerful variant. My guess is summer 2021, but the rollout speed is unclear.

Because the flagship 16-inch MacBook Pro would have the same entry level CPU as the 'budget' 13-inch MacBook Pro. Then reviewers and owners would (rightfully) ask questions like:
"Why does the 16-inch cost twice as much as the base 13-inch Pro but have the same performance?"

Additionally, putting the M1 in the 16-inch would be a significant downgrade in GPU performance over the current GPU selections.

If Apple was planning to put the M1 in the 16-inch, they probably would have released it alongside the other M1 computers. Most likely they are not going to release a 16-inch MBP powered by an Apple Silicon SoC until they can comfortably beat the current 16 inch's 5600M GPU, which the M1 doesn't come even close to, and until they can design a SoC that can offer more than 16 GB of RAM, which the M1 does not.
