BTW, 2 years ago there was a buz about Apple making an FM app available.. What happened? I think it is time to boycott APPLE products:mad::mad:

Just because there was a little buzz about it doesn't mean it was actually true.

There's an FM chip inside the iPod touch (required by the FCC), but Apple doesn't choose to utilize it. I doubt they ever will at this point.

I thought that requirement starts this year, so the next iPod touch or iPhone would have to have a chip. I wouldn't be surprised to be wrong though.

An AM/FM tuner along with 3G capability are two things I believe would be great additions to a 5th generation iPod touch. Unfortunately I don't think either will be included.

You mean GPS, 3G would certainly be a bridge too far.
Might as well call it an iPhone at that point :)

But yes I too would absolutely love FM/DAB+ & GPS.

Apple didn't implement that feature cause it would defeat the purpose of radio apps.

Radios apps are great, I use them, but they don't totally supplant the usefulness of integrated AM/FM/DAB+

I also pondered about the issue of no FM but with the apps I downloaded, I hardly realised the lack of FM. There is so much more to waste your time on.

You're probably right, but I think it still has a transmitter/receiver. They've been including this in the iPhone/iPod touch since the 3GS/3rd gen. I think this is the chip they are using.

You're right -- they are already using a chip that can receive/transmit analog FM radio. However, they didn't hook up an antenna to the chip.

The fact is, they chose that particular chip because of its convenient integration of other features such as WiFi and Bluetooth in a single package. That it can do FM radio as well is a happy coincidence, but ultimately, meaningless: A radio receiver without an antenna is effectively the same thing as no radio receiver at all.
