I'm curious in what realistic time frame something like this might happen according to users here?

I really wouldn’t expect to see an 8-core MacBook Pro for at least 2-3 years. And honestly if you are wanting to have a machine with that much juice, I’d personally rather get a desktop. A laptop, especially with the slender designs that Apple uses on the MacBook lineup don’t currently seem like they’d have enough cooling ability to handle the heat from an 8 core processor.

But that’s just my opinion. I’m happy enough to settle with the quad and hex core options they have now the next time I’m ready to upgrade.

It took 7 years to get from quad- to hexa-core machines. Not sure I'd be expecting anything any time soon, and would question what real world advantage 8 cores would actually bring on a laptop based on today's technology. I assume it would end up throttling pretty quickly.

I think that entirely depends on how aggressively AMD are in the next few years and whether they make a push for the mobile market or not.

When Apple switch to AMD, they could have the CPU+GPU+RAM(HBM) on a single interposer and cut the size of the logic board to 1/3rd it's current size. For the first time in over decade AMD is about be ahead of Intel in single core performance when Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000 series) comes out, and for the first time in 40 years AMD will have the process advantage.

2019 will just be an update to the current Macbook Pro is Apple follows tradition, with a redesign in 2020.

Many Hex core machines are having issues with thermals, and given the thinness of the MBP, I think an octo-core MBP is not on the horizon.
