I'm enjoying the new Notes app, but would feel better about using it if I could make a manual backup. Does anyone know where the files for the Notes app are stored?

    ny somewhere
if it's the same as in 10.10, it's here: (weird path, really): Home>Library>Containers>com.apple.Notes>Data>Library>Notes

if you're backing up (ie with time machine), it's getting backed up...

That folder hasn't been updated for over a year on my machine (didn't use notes until El Cap) and it's size is below 1k, so I'm guessing it's no longer used. Also, in the El Cap preview, they said it would use a new file system for iCloud, which may mean a different location.

I am not a Time Machine user (know too many who have had problems). I use Carbon Copy Cloner, which is great, if you know where files are stored and how to make them visible (Im sure I'm backing up, but I am not clear on how to selectively restore, if necessary).

I don't have El Cap running right now but I would look in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/.

    I think I found it: ~/Users/<username>/Library/Group Containers

It took a bit of fishing around knowing the size of the files from my iCloud storage data. This is definitely where the attachments are (they are kept in original format and name, making them viewable), and I suspect everything else is in the more esoteric files.
