Normally when I use Apple+Shitft+3, my screenshots go to desktop.

I used Apple+Control+Shift+4 to take a screen shot. I can hear the camera click, but there is nothing on the desktop. Where is the screenshot going? How can search for it?

When you include the control key, screenshots are put onto the clipboard for pasting. If you want the file saved to the desktop, don't press the control key.

Hit Apple+Control+Shift+4. Took the shot, then I opened up a textedit doc and hit Apple+V, the screenshot immediately pasted into the document.

Thank you very much, chabig, that was the answer.

My iMac quit saving to Desktop about a week ago and then one day all of a sudden the missing Screen Shots began showing up. Now they aren't saving to the Desktop any more. I am using "Command + Shift + 4" to make a selection to save.

[doublepost=1504422622][/doublepost]I have the same problem with an iMac running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 Eventually I discovered that they are being saved but not on the clipboard - they are going into my DropBox folder! I can't figure out why or how to change it.

And the tip he linked to about how to take screenshots of windows without their drop shadow (hold Option when clicking the selected window) is news to me, too. Good tips.
Disable the shadows permanently, if you wish. Enter this in a Terminal window:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true
